This study provides a comparison of the results of latent class analysis (LCA) and mixture Rasch model (MRM) analysis using data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study -2011 (TIMSS-2011) with a focus on the 8th-grade mathematics section. The research study focuses on the comparison of LCA and MRM to determine if results obtained differ when the assumed psychometric model differs. Also, a log-linear analysis was conducted to understand the interactions between latent classes identified by LCA and MRM. Response data to the three booklets were used to run latent class analysis using Mplus 7.31 (Muthén & Muthén, 2012a) for LCA and WINMIRA (von Davier, 2001a). The findings of this paper do not reveal unequivocally whether a model based on primarily qualitative differences (LCA), that is, different strategies, instructional differences, curriculum etc. or a model including additional factors of quantitative differences within strategies (MRM) should be used with this particular dataset. Both of the tests provided similar results with more or less similar interpretations. Both techniques fit the data similarly, a result found in prior research. Nonetheless, for tests similar to TIMSS exams, item difficulty parameters can be useful for educational researchers giving potential priority to use of MRM.
Bu araştırmanın amacı, COVID-19 pandemi öncesi ve sonrasındaki acil uzaktan eğitim sürecinde öğretmenlerin dijital yeterlikler konusundaki mesleki beceri durumlarındaki değişimin incelenmesidir. Öğretmenlerin, özellikle gelişen teknoloji karşısındaki dijital yeterliliklerinin ölçülmesi ve yeterlilik durumlarına göre mesleki gelişim planlamalarının yapılması büyük önem arz etmektedir. Bu doğrultuda pandemi sürecinin öğretmenlerin dijital yeterliliklerine etkisi raporlanmıştır. Tekrarlı ölçümler tarama modelinde tasarlanan bu araştırmanın örneklemini, Türkiye’nin yedi farklı coğrafi bölgesinde görev yapmakta olan, farklı branşlardan 6118 öğretmen oluşturmaktadır. T.C.
When the pandemic COVID -19 led to school closures, many of us had no idea that this disruption would last months and perhaps more than a year. Curriculum-based assessment (CBA) is an assessment process that uses academic knowledge picked directly from the material taught in the classroom. This form of criterion-referenced assessment connects evaluation with instructional programs by informing teachers of student progress and learning challenges. In this study a nationwide exam called Transition to Secondary School Exam TEOG Exam was used as a curriculum based tool since TEOG Exam is also second or third exam for semester. The data showed a one and a half year learning loss in both Turkish and mathematics based on Woesmann (2016)`s criteria. The difference in the scores for math exam between 2016 and 2020 was 10.32 points which accounts for half of exam standard deviation. Also, the difference in the scores for Turkish exam 2016 and 2020 was 10.91 points which is also around half of the standard deviation. Additionally, based on gender there was a statistically significant decrease of 12.04 points in the mathematics scores of girls and 8.43 points for boys showing a 15-month learning loss for girls. and a year of learning loss for boys. These results showed that girls had more learning losses due to COVID-19 pandemic. According to the mother's education level; the decrease for mathematics scores were between 9.73 (elementary school degree) and 22.02 points (associate degree). This finding shows that the learning loss in math based on mother educational level is between 15-months and 2.5 years. Similar findings showed up for Turkish scores as well. Turkish scores decreased between 10.43 (elementary school degree) and 22.24 points (associate degree). This finding shows that the learning loss in Turkish based on mother educational level is between 15-months and 2.5 years. These results show that some students did not learn new material after the outbreak and even slipped backwards. Ministry of National Education should take important steps to prevent the effects of COVID-19 pandemic and minimize and resolve the learning losses emphasized in this study.
This study examines the online assessment-evaluation activities in distance education processes. The effects of different online exam application styles considering the online assessment-evaluation in distance education processes, including all programs of a higher education institution, were documented. The population for online assessment-evaluation activities, exam types, and student achievement scores comprised 3830 courses by 805 academics over the Uşak University learning management system and 29511 students. organisThe data were analysed with descriptive statistics and t-tests for comparisons. It was found that academics preferred multiple-choice exam formats more than online assignments or classical (written) ones. Moreover, students' success scores in multiple-choice exams were significantly higher than exams including open-ended questionsIt was also found that average exam success was higher when the questions were presented as separate but as a group. The findings were discussed and reported with a literature review.
