A list of species of butterflies from Serra da Jibóia, a mountainous massif in the Recôncavo of Bahia State, is presented based on specimens deposited in the entomological collection Prof. Johann Becker of Museu de Zoologia da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (MZUEFS), results that should contribute with the increment of biodiversity knowledge of the butterfly fauna of the State. The list includes 140 species, 86 of which are new records to Bahia and a new species of genus of Perophthalma Westwood (Riodinidae). Nymphalidae was the richest family with 60 species. Most of the species listed in the present work has a widely geographic distribution in Brazil and occur in open areas.
Borboletas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea e Hesperioidea) da Serra da Jibóia, Bahia, Brasil
Resumo. Uma lista das espécies de borboletas da Serra da Jibóia, um maciço montanhoso no Recôncavo baiano, é apresentada com base no exame da coleção entomológica Prof. Johann Becker do Museu de Zoologia da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (MZUEFS), visando contribuir para o conhecimento da fauna de borboletas do estado da Bahia. A lista inclui 140 espécies, das quais 86 espécies são novos registros para o estado da Bahia e uma nova espécie do gênero of Perophthalma Westwood (Riodinidae). Nymphalidae foi a família de maior riqueza com 60 espécies. A maioria das espécies listadas possui ampla distribuição geográfica no Brasil e ocorre em áreas abertas.
Abstract:The knowledge of butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea and Hesperioidea) diversity in Caatinga biome is incipient when compared to the others Brazilian's biomes. Areas considered as priorities for biodiversity conservation in the Caatinga still remain with poor knowledge about their lepidopteran fauna diversity such as the Chapada Diamantina. A study of the diversity of butterflies supported by Programa de Pesquisa em Biodiversidade to the Semiarid region (PPBio) was carried out in two areas considered as priorities for biodiversity conservation in the Caatinga from Bahia State, Morro do Chapéu and Senhor do Bonfim located in the northern portion of the Chapada Diamantina. The samples were realized in dry seasons. A total of 169 species was identified and two of them are new species. Nymphalidae was richest among others butterflies families with 82 species. Two species were registered as endemic to Caatinga.
A new species of Taygetis Hübner, [1819] (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Satyrinae) from southeastern Brazil is described: Taygetis drogoni
sp. n. In addition, T. servius Weymer, 1910 and T. fulginia d’Almeida, 1922 are resurrected from synonymy and a taxonomic discussion on the species T. ypthima Hübner, [1821] and T. rectifascia Weymer, 1907 is provided. A dichotomous key for the species is also provided.
O Semiárido brasileiro corresponde, praticamente, aos limites do bioma Caatinga, sendo uma das regiões com menor número de unidades de conservação e com maior deficiência em estudos da biodiversidade de borboletas. Sendo assim, inventários visando contribuir para o conhecimento da diversidade local são extremamente necessários e urgentes. No presente estudo, uma lista das espécies de borboletas da Serra da Fumaça (Pindobaçu, Bahia, Brasil), foi elaborada baseada em amostragens mensais realizadas no período de Abril a Outubro de 2011, com duração de dois dias. Foram utilizadas rede entomológica e armadilhas com iscas de banana fermentada em caldo-de-cana. Em um total de 1.295 horas de amostragem (97 horas de captura com rede entomológica e 1.198 horas com armadilhas) foram registrados 756 indivíduos de 121 espécies, das quais dezessete são novos registros para o Semiárido e quatro, exclusivamente, para o estado da Bahia.
List of Butterflies Species (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea and Papilionoidea) in a Northeastern Brazilian Semiarid Area
Abstract. The Brazilian Semiarid region practically corresponds to the Caatinga biome boundary, being one of the regions with lowest number of conservations unities and greater deficiency in butterflies’ biodiversity studies. Therefore, inventories in order to contribute to knowledge of local diversity are extremely necessary and urgent. In the present study, a list of butterflies’ species from Serra da Fumaça (municipality of Pindobaçu, state of Bahia, Brazil) was developed based on monthly sampling carried out from April to October 2011, lasting two days. The methods used were active capture with entomological nets and traps baited of fermented banana with juice sugar cane. In a total of 1,295 hours of sampling (97 hours of capture with entomological nets and 1,198 hours with traps) were registered 756 individuals of 121 species, of which seventeen are new records for the Semiarid region and four, exclusively, to state of Bahia.
Three species of Pampasatyrus Hayward, 1953 (Satyrinae, Pronophilina) are transferred to Stegosatyrus n. gen. (Euptychiina) based on morphological evidence: S. imbrialis (Weeks, 1901) n. comb. from Bolivia (Cochabamba) and northern Argentina; S. ocelloides (Schaus, 1902) n. comb. from Paraguay (Hernandarias and Caaguazú) and Brazil (Midwest, Southeast and South regions); and S. periphas (Godart, [1824]) n. comb. from southern Brazil, northeastern Argentina (Buenos Aires) and Uruguay. A new species is described, Stegosatyrus hemiclara Pyrcz, Boyer & Zacca, n. sp. from the Andes of southern Peru. The neotype of Satyrus periphas Godart, [1824] and the lectotypes of Epinephele imbrialis Weeks, 1901 and Euptychia ocelloides Schaus, 1902 are designated. Redescriptions and illustrations are presented, including information on geographical and temporal distribution, and habitats. The oviposition process, eggs and first instars of S. periphas are published for the first time.
The discovery of a new species of satyrine butterfly, Magneuptychia louisammour Benmesbah & Zacca, sp. n., that is phenotypically similar to a sympatric species widely known as Magneuptychia ocypete (Fabricius, 1776), led to a review of the taxonomic status of M. ocypete. A neotype for Papilio ocypete Fabricius, 1776 is designated and its redescription is provided. Neonympha sabina C. Felder & R. Felder, 1867 and Euptychia helle var. olivacea Aurivillius, 1929 are treated as junior subjective synonyms of P. ocypete and a lectotype is designated for each name. A neotype for the preoccupied name Papilio helle Cramer, 1779, and its replacement name Magneuptychia fugitiva Lamas, [1997], is also designated, and a redescription of this name and discussion of its taxonomic status are provided. We describe an additional phenotypically similar species, Magneuptychia kamel Benmesbah & Zacca, sp. n. from the western Amazon and raise the name Magneuptychia opima sheba Brévignon & Benmesbah, 2012 to species rank (stat. rev.) on the basis of morphological and DNA sequence evidence. We also discuss the difficulties regarding taxonomic and geographical delimitation in these complex species groups. Observations on Euptychiina behaviour are also provided. Finally, based on external characters and male genitalia, a proposed preliminary arrangement of two species groups is proposed, including other species of Magneuptychia Forster, 1964 and Cissia Doubleday, 1848.
