Stegosatyrus, a new genus of Euptychiina from the grasslands of neotropical realm (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae)

Abstract: Three species of Pampasatyrus Hayward, 1953 (Satyrinae, Pronophilina) are transferred to Stegosatyrus n. gen. (Euptychiina) based on morphological evidence: S. imbrialis (Weeks, 1901) n. comb. from Bolivia (Cochabamba) and northern Argentina; S. ocelloides (Schaus, 1902) n. comb. from Paraguay (Hernandarias and Caaguazú) and Brazil (Midwest, Southeast and South regions); and S. periphas (Godart, [1824]) n. comb. from southern Brazil, northeastern Argentina (Buenos Aires) and Uruguay. A new species is described… Show more

“…Higher and species-level taxonomy of all records were checked and updated, based on Blandin (1988), McAlpine (1971), Jenkins (1985), Jenkins (1990), Bristow (1981, 1982, 1991), Holzinger and Holzinger (1994), Tyler et al 1994, Hall (1998), Hall (2000), Willmott (2003), Lamas (2004), Bálint (2005), Hall (2005), Blandin (2007a), Hall (2007), Austin (2008), Penz (2008), Faynel et al (2012), Dolibaina et al (2013), Ortiz-Acevedo and Willmott (2013), Seraphim et al (2013), Zacca et al (2013), Dias et al (2014) and Díaz et al (2014). “…However, further detailed morphological studies on Euptychiina are highly required to clarify the species and genera delimitations within the subtribe. As clear morphological keys are generated, several monophyletic groups are easily identified using informative synapomorphies (Freitas 2007, Freitas et al 2010, Zacca et al 2013). Nonetheless, because of this lack of information, the description of a new genus for the five species treated here would be premature.…”

“…The butterfly subtribe Euptychiina includes over 400 described species in 45 genera, being one of the most diverse groups in the subfamily Satyrinae (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae) (Lamas 2004, Peña et al 2010, Zacca et al 2013). This group is predominantly Neotropical, but some species also occur in the Neartic region and in Southeast Asia (Peña et al 2010, Matos-Maraví et al 2013).…”

Opoptera aorsa aorsa had only been previously recorded in the north and northwestern regions of Rio Grande do Sul state (Giovenardi et al 2008(Giovenardi et al , 2013.…”
