Comparisons of agricultural and natural ecosystems reveal the magnitude of the effects of agricultural practices on the diversity and abundance of soil nematodes. Consequently, there is the need for testing ecological hypotheses, specifically with regard to nematode ecology, in natural and agricultural soils to seek strategies for biological control and environmental monitoring. We studied soil nematode assemblages and soil physical attributes of five soil layers (0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40 and 40-50 cm) from sugarcane plantations and forest remnants in the sugarcane zone of Pernambuco State, Brazil. Structure and composition of the nematode assemblage and soil properties differed between forest and sugarcane soils, even in the same locality. The soil bulk density and the abundance of all nematodes and the diversity of plant-parasitic nematodes were greater whereas soil porosity, soil respiration and abundance of predator nematodes were smaller in sugarcane than in forest areas. We suggest that sugarcane management practices result in changes in the soil properties and concomitantly alter the composition and structure of the nematode assemblages. Co-inertia analysis indicated that others environmental factors also might be affecting the nematofauna.
Edaphic climatic conditions directly affect the population dynamics of nematode assemblages and management strategies. The objective of this study was to characterize spatiotemporal changes in nematode abundance and diversity in sugarcane fields of northeastern Brazil under different edaphic climatic conditions. Soil samples from seven geoenvironmental sites under continuous cultivation were taken at planting and 4, 9, and 14 months after planting. Nematode abundance and diversity varied with the soil's physical and chemical characteristics. Sites in the rainfed and irrigated coastal tables as well the floodplain had higher number of nematodes in contrast to the flat-land and hillside. The abundance of plant-parasitic nematodes increased concurrently with crop development, but the number of taxa decreased. Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus were the dominant plant-parasitic genera across locations, but bacterivores were dominant in southern sites at field replanting. Heat map delineated two distinct groups of nematode distribution within the geoenvironmental zones, rather than the sampling times. Pratylenchus density was high in both groups, but in contrast with Meloidogyne and Criconemella, the abundance of Pratylenchus and Helicotylenchus was higher in sites with lower soil bulk density and higher porosity, clay, organic matter, and water contents as those in the southern sites, reflecting edaphic climatic conditions.
The plant-parasitic nematodes Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus are the main nematode pathogens reducing sugarcane yield worldwide. Despite, defense responses to overcome the pathogen stresses through neutralizing cytotoxicity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been reported for a range of important crops and pathogens, few studies have been developed for sugarcane under nematode stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate responses of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) at different density of Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus in a sugarcane replant field and in a ratoon crop. Evaluations based on nematode densities, plant growth parameters and SOD and APX activity at six (T6) and nine (T9) months after planting (Area 1) or cutting (Area 2 - ratoon crop). Pratylenchus abundance significantly decreased in Area 1, but not in Area 2. In contrast, Meloidogyne abundance increased through time in Area 1, but decreased in Area 2. In both areas, SOD activity decreased over time, but APX activity did not present significant fluctuation over time in Area 1, in contrast to the increase over time of APX activity in Area 2. Abundance of both nematodes correlated positively with number of tillers and negatively with height of stalks, besides the negative correlation between Pratylenchus and stalk diameter. This inverse correlation between the plant-parasitic nematode and stalk number was also demonstrated by the PCA. There was not significant correlation between the antioxidant enzymes and plant growth parameters or nematode abundance, except the positive correlation between SOD activity and number of tillers.
