The stock analysts have a relevant role in the capital market, since, directly or indirectly, they contribute to the paper pricing and to the composition of the investment portfolio. The purpose of this study is to verify if it is possible to obtain extraordinary returns, above those offered by a market portfolio, with the monitoring of the stock recommendations issued by Brazilian capital market analysts, one of the most important in Latin America. Based on a wide range of consensual recommendations concerning the period from 2000 to 2010, and with the monitoring of the historical series of paper returns covered by the analyses, the performance of two portfolios were compared, one formed by stocks that received favorable and the other one formed by stocks that received unfavorable analyst recommendations. The results showed bias in recommendations, since there is, systematically, a greater number of favorable against unfavorable recommendations. The results mainly showed that the analysts were unable to identify the stocks that actually offered greater returns within the period considered. All Rights Reserved

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the relationship of interdependence and contagion between BRICS countries and emerging non-BRICS countries is similar to that observed between developed countries and emerging BRICS countries. Design/methodology/approach The authors analyzed 15 markets: 5 BRICS, 5 developed (USA, Japan, Germany, England and France) and 5 emerging markets (Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, Iran and Poland). Based on the time series of returns of the main stock indexes of each country, referring to the period from 2008 to 2018, the authors applied Granger causality tests, vector auto-regression and the dynamic conditional correlation-GARCH model. Findings The results led to the rejection of the main hypothesis and showed adherence to the behaviors predicted in the literature for the relations between the groups of markets. Originality/value This paper, besides analyzing the interdependence between markets in times of crisis, analyzes the effect of contagion between developed and emerging markets.

ResumoEste trabalho analisa a relação ente desempenho econômico EVA® (Economic Valued Added) e retorno da ação. Segundo a lógica das finanças, espera-se uma correlação positiva entre as variáveis. Surge então, a seguinte questão de pesquisa: com base em dados trimestrais entre 31-03-1998 e 30-09-2006, há correlação entre retorno da ação e EVA® das empresas não financeiras listadas no índice do IBrX-50 da BOVESPA? Calculam-se as variáveis por meio de dados coletados na Economatica®. Retorno da ação representa a divisão entre valor da ação em t1/ valor da ação em t0 menos 1 e multiplicado por 100. Como proxy para desempenho econômico, utiliza--se o EVA® calculado pela metodologia contida em Assaf Neto (2003). Os resultados apontam presença de correlação em somente uma empresa, e ainda negativa, entre o retorno da ação e o EVA® (valores percentuais). Quando se utiliza a variação do EVA® (valores nominais), os resultados indicam correlação negativa em 17 (61%) empresas. Esse resultado está distante da lógica das finanças. No entanto, há limitações que podem alterar os números. As proxy podem criar distorções. Por isso, sugerem-se novos estudos com outras medidas de desempenho econômi-cos, períodos e empresas.Palavras-Chave: EVA® (Economic Valued Added); Retorno da Ação.

Resumo Este trabalho aborda a criação de valor por empresas de capital aberto do setor sucroalcooleiro brasileiro, medida pelo EVA e pelo MVA. Foram analisados a existência e o nível de correlação entre os EVAs gerados por empresas sucroalcooleiras (São Martinho, Cosan, Cosan Limited e Guarani) e os respectivos MVAs alcançados no mercado. Os resultados obtidos revelaram uma correlação estatisticamente significativa, ao nível de 5%, apenas para a Cosan Limited. Não foram detectadas correlações significativas para três das quatro empresas analisadas. Concluímos que o EVA não é uma medida consistente para sinalizar o comportamento futuro do MVA das empresas.

The more quality information there is about the business, or financial and economic performance of a certain company, theoretically, the more one can expect a different perception of risk by the investor. The aim of this study was to verify whether the initiative of the companies to adhere to BMF BOVESPA’s Differentiated Levels of Corporate Governance impacts both at risk and return of the closing price of its shares. For that, daily returns of 252 days before and after the accession of companies to NDGC were used. Over the measures of absolute risk (standard deviation) and relative risk (beta), and return, Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests were made in order to analyze normality, as well as parametric test of paired means and Wilcoxon’s non-parametric test. The behaviors of the roles of 48 companies were analyzed. The results showed that the means of the returns of the companies’ shares showed no significant differences before and after the date of accession to NDGC. Moreover, the risk proxies were significantly different.
