Recibido/sUMMarYThis study was aimed at assessing the genetic diversity in herds of Marota goats and examine the impact of molecular markers in the genetic management of conservation herds. Seventy-six animals of one conservation heard and ten animals of a private herd were genotyped with the Illumina 50K goat SNP Chip. The dispersion of animal was evaluated with a principal component analysis (PCA) and a dendogram. Matings were simulated between animals with the largest distance in the dendogram and lowest coefficient of inbreeding (FIS) (Management I) and compared to random mating (Management II). High values of observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosity were obtained for adult animals (Ho=0.372 and He=0.405) and offspring (Ho=0.359 and He=0.374). The mean FIS was 6.4%, indicating a low risk of gene loss in the conservation herd. Genetic variability was also observed in the private herd (Ho=0.374 and He=0.498), but the risk of endogamy was higher. The PCA revealed that the two herds were genetically similar. The simulation of 10 mating pairs of each breeder indicated that the mean coefficient of inbreeding of the formed pairs in Mana...
Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters for worm resistance (WR) and associated characteristics, using the linear-threshold animal model via Bayesian inference in single-and multiple-trait analyses. Methods: Data were collected from a herd of Santa Inê s breed sheep. All information was collected with animals submitted to natural contamination conditions. All data (number of eggs per gram of feces, FEC); Famacha score, FS; body condition score, BCS; and hematocrit, HCT) were collected on the same day. The animals were weighed individually on the day after collection (after 12-h fasting). The WR trait was defined by the multivariate cluster analysis, using the number of eggs per gram of feces (FEC), hematocrit (HCT), body condition score (BCS), and Famacha score (FS), of material collected from naturally infected sheep of the Santa Inê s breed. The variance components and genetic parameters for the WR, FEC, HCT, ECC, and FS traits were estimated using the Bayesian inference under the linear and threshold animal model. Results: A low magnitude was obtained for repeatability of worm-related traits. The mean values estimated for heritability were of low-to-high (0.05-0.88) magnitude. The FEC, HCT, BCS, FS, and body weight (BW) traits showed higher heritability (although low magnitude) in the multiple-trait model due to increased information about traits. All WR characters showed a significant genetic correlation, and heritability estimates ranged from low (0.44; single-trait model) to high (0.88; multiple-trait model). Conclusion: Therefore, we suggest that FS be included as a criterion of ovine genetic selection for endoparasite resistance using the trait defined by multivariate cluster analysis, as it will provide greater genetic gains when compared to any single trait. In addition, its measurement is easy and inexpensive, exhibiting greater heritability and repeatability and a high genetic correlation with the trait of resistance to worms.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the forage-intake process of goats feeding on Massai grass pastures with different heights (40, 50, 60, and 70 cm). The experimental design was completely randomized, with treatments corresponding to four sward heights with two replicates over time and space. Collected data were related to the forage-intake process and the chemical and morphological composition of the pasture. Grazing trials (45 min) were performed with four Anglo-Nubian crossbred goats. Total forage mass intake, bite mass, and intake rate were expressed in relation to animal weight. Pasture density, forage mass, and leaf blade increased as forage height increased. The chemical composition of forage at the evaluated heights was similar, except for reduced crude protein content at 70-cm height. Bite rate, intake rate, and time per bite had a quadratic relationship with increasing sward height. The greatest intake rate was observed at 54.7 cm of height, with 0.136 g DM min -1 kg -1 LW. Bite rate exhibited a linear and positive correlation with increase in intake. At the 50-cm height, goats harvested a mass of 3.65 g DM bite -1 kg -1 LW, when they performed 34.5 bites per minute. Adult goats had a greater forage intake on 50-cm high Massai grass pastures because they could obtain a greater bite mass in a shorter time per bite. Key words: Bite mass. Bite rate. Intake rate.
