Palavras-chave: correlação, índice corporal, morfometria corporal, peso, tamanho Morphometric characterization of Santa Inês sheep raised in the regions of Teresina and Campo Maior, PiauíABSTRACT -This study aimed to carry out the phenotypic characterization of males and females of Santa Inês hair sheep through body weight measurements and morphmetric and conformation evaluations at different ages. Data consisted of body weights and measurements from 1,113 animals raised in Teresina and Campo Maior regions of Piauí State under pasture regime and 824 animals that participated in Agricultural Fairs in Teresina. Adjusted means for body weight, withers and croup height, corporal and croup length, thoracic perimeter and two indexes of body capacity of the animal were compared by the Student-Newman-Keuls test. The management effect was an important source of variation for the evaluated traits and the sexual dimorphism was more accentuated in the oldest animals. The effects included in the model influenced more the body weights than the morph metric measurements. The index of body capacity (weight and length) indicated a trend for more accumulation of fat in oldest males than in females. The body weight and the morphmetric measurements were positively correlated indicating the possibility of correlated response in breeding programs for the Santa Inês breed.
ABSTRACT. This study evaluated the influence of Tanzania-grass sward height (30, 50, 70 and 90 cm) on the morphological characteristics of the canopy, grazing behavior and forage intake by adult Anglo Nubian female goats. A completely randomized experimental design was employed, with two replicates in space and two replicates in time. Six animals were used to assess the grazing behavior, and four, the ingestion process. The rise in sward height increased the forage and leaf mass, the percentages of stem and dead material, and reduced the leaf stem -1 ratio. Above 50 cm there was an increase in grazing time and a decrease in leisure time. A positive linear correlation was detected between sward height and bite depth. The consumed forage mass, ingestion rate and daily intake were higher at 50 cm, indicating that the other heights reduced the intake process. The sward height was negatively correlated to the bite rate and positively to the bite time. The sward height of 50 cm presents the best combination of features, favoring the grazing and ingestive behavior of female adult goats. Keywords: consumption, forage production, bite rate, ingestion rate, grazing time.
The forage mass, sward structure, the ingestive and grazing behavior and forage intake by goats grazing on Tanzania-grass at 22 and 37 days of regrowth were evaluated. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with eight replications for evaluating the pasture and bite depth, and six replications for evaluating intake, feeding and grazing behavior. The forage canopy height ranged from 64.1 to 92.7 cm. Higher forage mass was observed at 37 days, and the best leaf/stem ratio, at 22 regrowth days. The bite depth did not differ between regrowth ages. The biting rate for the 22 regrowth days (23.07 bites min.-1) was higher than at 37 days (19.06 bites min.-1). The grazing time was longer at the regrowth age of 22 days (5.58h) than at 37 days (4.51h). The average feed intake was 2.75% of the body weight and was not different between regrowth ages.
Leaf-to-stem ratio and bromatological characteristics of CampoGrande stylo regrowth at five cutting ages. The aim of this research study was to evaluate the bromatological composition and leaf-to-stem ratio of Campo-Grande stylo, at five regrowth ages, with and without phosphorus. The investigation was carried out in a randomized blocks experimental design, with four replications in a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement -two levels of phosphorus (with or without) and five cutting ages (30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 days). Phosphorus was applied as a single superphosphate, equivalent to 50 kg ha -1 P 2 O 5 . The leaf-to-stem ratio (L/S) and the percentage of crude protein (CP) decreased with increasing age of regrowth, with and without phosphorus fertilization. Crude protein yield (CPY) with phosphorus fertilization increased linearly; yield without fertilization was quadratic, decreasing between 45 and 50 days of regrowth. The percentages of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) increased with regrowth age. The percentage of acid detergent fiber (ADF) followed a quadratic trend, decreasing at the ages of 45 and 50 days. Phosphorus fertilization had no effect on L/S, CP, DM, NDF and ADF of CampoGrande stylo. The age of regrowth of 30 and 50 days have minimal effect on the bromatological composition of Campo-Grande stylo.
The objective of this study was to assess the agronomic, morphogenic and structural characteristics of tropical forage grasses during the establishment phase and throughout the second year in northeast Brazil. The treatments included 9 grasses: Brachiaria humidicola (koronivia grass), Brachiaria hybrid cv. Mulato, Brachiaria brizantha cvv. Piatã, Xaraés and Marandu, Brachiaria ruziziensis (ruzi grass), Brachiaria decumbens (signal grass), Panicum hybrid cv. Massai and Andropogon gayanus (gamba grass). The grasses were planted in a randomized complete block design with 4 replications. The following parameters were measured: total forage production, leaf:stem ratio, tiller population density, number of dead tillers, leaf emergence rate, phyllochron, leaf elongation rate, stem elongation rate, rate of leaf senescence, final length of leaf blade and life-span of leaves. In the establishment year, cv. Mulato produced the highest forage yields, followed by cvv. Xaraés and Massai, with gamba grass and koronivia grass worst. In the second year, cvv. Mulato, Xaraés and Marandu, and gamba grass showed highest forage production, while cvv. Massai and Piatã produced the least. All grasses showed a marked drop in production during the dry season. Cultivar Massai consistently had the highest leaf:stem ratio. The morphogenic and structural characteristics differed according to cultivar and season of the year. In general, leaf emergence rate, leaf elongation rate, stem elongation rate, rate of leaf senescence, final length of the leaf blade, number of live leaves per tiller and density of living tillers were higher in the rainy season, while the phyllochron and life-span of leaves were higher in the dry season. The results of this research highlight the potential of the Brachiaria cultivars Mulato and Xaraés, gamba grass and Panicum cv. Massai in subhumid Maranhão, northeast Brazil. Agroforestry systems (AFS) are considered alternative land use options to help prevent soil degradation and improve soil microbial biomass and organic C status. However, it is unclear how different densities of babassu palm [Attalea speciosa (syn. Orbignya phalerata)], which is an important tree in Northeast Brazil, affect the soil microbial biomass. We investigated the soil microbial biomass C and activity under AFS with different densities of babassu palm associated with Brachiaria brizantha grass. Soil microbial biomass C (MBC), soil microbial biomass N (MBN), MBC:total organic C ratio, fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis and dehydrogenase activity showed highest values in plots with high density of babassu palm. On the other hand, the respiratory quotient (qCO 2 ) was significantly greater in plots without babassu palm.
Jatobá, and open field were: 74, 62, and 82 %, respectively, relative
