The objective of this study was to analyze the growth of the Brazil nut tree seedlings in the nursery under different levels of shading. The treatments tested were five environments: T75 = 75% shade; T50 = 50% shade; T25 = 25% shade; TCza = gray screen; and TPsol = full sun. The growth were evaluated after 185 days the plants remain in individual cages, measuring height, stem diameter, basal as well as the number, the length and width of the sheets. Also evaluated in chlorophyll content and calculate the chlorophyll content a, b, and total carotenoid. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared by Tukey test (p <0.05). We conclude that the environments with medium shading 25 and 50% are best suited for seedling development of the Brazil nut trees, allowing more vigorous plant growth. The plants in more shaded environments and full sun have higher levels of chlorophyll and carotenoids as an adaptive strategy.
Brazil nut is a very important nontimber forest product in the Amazon region. Propagation of this tree still represents a challenge due to slow and uneven seed germination. In this context, plant growth-promoting bacteria can facilitate the process of propagation. The aims of this study were to isolate and characterize endophytic bacteria from the roots of Brazil nut trees in native terra firme forest and cultivation areas in northern Brazil, and to identify mechanisms by which bacteria act in plant growth promotion. Overall, 90 bacterial isolates were obtained from the roots of Brazil nut trees in monoculture, agroforestry and native forest areas by using different semisolid media. The isolates were characterized by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. Plant growth-promoting characteristics were evaluated by the presence of the nifH gene, aluminum phosphate solubilization and the production of indole compounds. The isolates were affiliated with 18 genera belonging to 5 different classes (α-Proteobacteria, β-Proteobacteria, γ-Proteobacteria, Bacilli and Actinobacteria). The genus Bacillus was predominant in the forest and monoculture areas. Fourteen isolates presented the nifH gene. Most of the bacteria were able to solubilize aluminum phosphate and synthetize indole compounds. The results indicated high diversity of endophytic bacteria present among the roots of Brazil nut trees, mainly in the agroforestry area, which could be related to soil attributes. Among the 90 isolates, the 22 that presented the best results regarding plant growth promotion traits were good candidates for testing in seedling production of Brazil nut trees.
Camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia (Kunth) McVaugh) is an indigenous fruit of the floodplain and riparian forests of the Amazon region. In Brazil, Roraima state has appropriate conditions for this fruit production. Cultivation outside the floodplains is an alternative to increase the availability of fruits, since flowering occurs almost all year round, and fruit bearing coincides with the end of the dry season and early rain season. The objective of this study was to evaluate the vegetative development of 6 camu-camu subsamples selected from the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia-INPA (Amazonas state), in a savanna region near Boa Vista city (Roraima, Brazil). The experiment was conducted at the Serra da Prata Experimental Station of the Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA), with a climate type Am according to Köppen climate classification. Four parameters were evaluated for the growth analysis, the basal stem diameter (mm), the plant height (cm), and numbers of basal and terminal shoots, as well as the numbers of flowers and fruits. Measurements were made at 90 days intervals in order to define the growth curve of each subsample for 30 months Based on the parameters of vegetative growth and early flowering, we recommend the UAT 1096-5 subsample with the best vegetative development for transition forest/Savanna area, presenting moreover higher number of terminal shoots, greater height, and early flowering than the remaining camu-camu subsamples. At 30 months after planting, the UAT 1896-7 and UAT 0796-8 subsamples showed no statistical difference from UAT 1096-5 regarding the number of terminal shoots, but showed slightly lower height, with a statistically significant difference. The UAT 1596-7, UAT 1796-7, and URUBU-2 subsamples showed the lowest number of terminal shoots, although UAT 1596-7 presented greater height than the others. In relation to precocity, peak flowering occurred in January, 30 months after planting, with the UAT 0796-8 and UAT 1096-5 subsamples excelling over others, with 500 and 435 flowers in total, respectively.
Two experiments were carried out in a greenhouse to evaluate the variability in macronutrient contents in relation to growth regulator sprays on ‘Thompson Seedless’ and ‘Italia’ grapevines. The treatments were: chlormequat - 1,500mg L-1; daminozide - 3,000mg L-1; uniconazole - 30mg L-1; mepiquat chloride - 300mg .L-1 and control. The cuttings were grafted on the ‘Tropical’ rootstock and were rooted in sand. After 105 days of growth they were transplanted to 35L pots with a mixture of 1:1:1 volume of sand, soil and organic matter. Grapevines were pruned each 150 days, leaving two canes with six buds each for the ‘Italia’ cultivar and with fifteen buds for the ‘Thompson Seedless’ cultivar. Water was supplied through drip irrigation (1L/plant/day). Grapevines were fertilized with 1L of manure and micronutrient solution at each pruning. Macronutrients (MAP-1.45g, Ca2NO3-3.42g, urea-1.61g de , KCl-3.53g and MgSO4-1.94g) were suplied each 15 days during the plant growth. The petioles and the shoots were sampled each growth season (150 days) and dry matter was evaluated for yield and macronutrient contents (N, P, K, Ca and Mg). Results show that the spray of growth regulators induced alteration in the macronutrient patterns due to the decrease of shoot rate growth and increase in fruitfull shoots.
