RIPENING AND SENESCENCE OF PAPAYA WITH 1-METHILCYCLOPROPENEABSTRACT: Papaya (Carica papaya L.) fruits are highly perishable due the fast ripening after harvest. The search for techniques that extend the shelf life and reduce the post-harvest losses is desirable. In this study, papaya 'Sunrise Solo' fruits were harvested in two ripening stages (green and ripe) and treated with the competitive ethylene antagonist 1-methycyclopropene (1-MCP) at concentrations of 0, 30, 90 or 270 nL L -1 for 12 h at 20 o C followed by storage at room temperature (20 o C) during eight days. Application of 1-MCP (90 or 270 nL L -1 ) delayed degreening decay. Green fruits treated with 1-MCP (270 nL L -1 ) presented higher firmness in relation to control fruits. 1-MCP did not affect the soluble solids of fruits. The respiration rate and ethylene production were lower in fruits treated with 1-MCP (90 or 270 nL L -1 ) in both ripening stages. 1-MCP extended the shelf life of green fruits from four to six days and the shelf life of ripe fruits from two to four days. The 1-MCP was efficient to delay the ripening of papayas extending their shelf life.

ASTRINGENCY REMOVAL OF 'GIOMBO' PERSIMMON FRUIT IN DIFFERENT EXPOSURE PERIODS TO ETHYL ALCOHOL VAPORABSTRACT -The purpose of this research was to study the effect of exposure period to ethyl alcohol vapor on astringency removal of persimmon fruits (Diospyros kaki L.) cv. Giombo. Fruits were exposed to alcohol vapor for 24, 36 and 48 hours at 20°C and 95% RH. Chemical and physical characteristics of fruits were measured for ten days, at two day intervals. Soluble tannin content, flesh firmness, water loss, pH, soluble solids, titratable acidity and ascorbic acid content were measured. This research showed that 24 and 36 hours were equally efficient in the astringency removal of fruits, although the analysis of other quality indices showed that fruits exposed for 24 hours exhibited better quality. The flesh firmness underwent a linear decrease in terms of time. The best period for consumption of the fruits was placed between the 4 th and 8 th day after the treatment. Fruits became edible at the 4 th day after the treatment, when the content of soluble tannins was under 0.1%, imperceptible to taste, and the flesh firmness was kept for 8 days after the treatment.
EFFECTS OF GIBBERELLIN AND ETHEPHON ON THE ANATOMY OF SUGAR CANE PLANTSABSTRACT -This research was carried out to study the effects of gibberellin (GA 50 mg L ) on the anatomy of sugar cane. Seed derived seedlings were sprayed with the growth regulators. Various plant parts (+4 leaves, +10 node, and +10 internode) were harvested at 216 days after sowing, sectioned and mounted on permanent slides. GA treated plants displayed intense meristematic activity, with continuous production of vascular bundles with reduced amount of fibers. The same treatment resulted in lower number and size of buliform cells in +4 leaves. CEPA treated plants showed lower meristematic activity of +10 node, reduced amount of fibers in the vascular bundles, and increased the number of buliform cells.Index terms: Saccharum officinarum, plant growth regulators, gibberellic acid. para o país.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of isolated and combined applications of gibberellic acid (gibberellin), indolbutyric acid (auxin) and kinetin (cytokinin) on vegetative and reproductive development of tomato test plants (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom), to better elucidate the interactions among these hormonal classes. The following treatments were accomplished through foliar application: GA3 (5 mg L-1); IBA (5 mg L-1); KIN (9 mg L-1); GA3 + IBA (5 mg L-1 + 5 mg L-1); GA3 + KIN (5 mg L-1 + 9 mg L-1); IBA + KIN (5 mg L-1 + 9 mg L-1); GA3 + IBA + KIN (5 mg L-1 + 5 mg L-1 + 9 mg L-1) and Stimulate® (100 mL L-1). Plants from the control were sprayed with water. Stimulate®, is a commercial liquid formulation containing KIN (90 mg L-1), GA3 (50 mg L-1) and IBA (50 mg L-1). We analyzed the shoot dry matter (g), root dry matter (g); fruit fresh matter (g); fruit dry matter (g) and fruit size (cm). The experimental design was completely randomized with nine treatments and fifteen replications. The treatment means were compared by Tukey's test. Some combined applications of GA3, IBA and KIN or Stimulate® promoted significant increases in the dry matter accumulation of roots and fresh and dry matter of fruit compared to the control. Besides the perspective to extend such results for commercial tomato production, the relevance of known hormonal interactions for the results obtained is discussed.
THE EFFECT OF GIBBERELLIC ACID (GA 3 ) ON BLOOMING AND PRODUCTIONOF THE 'TAHITI' ACID LIME (Citrus latifolia Tan.)ABSTRACT -The flowering in citrus trees, as well as in other fruit trees, is one of the decisive factors for the production. The inhibition possibility or reduction of the normal flowering and alteration of the production season for the 'Tahiti' acid lime is a primordial factor to determine it economical profitability. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of gibberellic acid on blooming, number of formed flowers of the 'Tahiti ' acid lime in the conditions of the state of São Paulo, Brazil looking for to inhibit its normal blooming and to quantify the effect of this inhibition on the out-of-season production. The experimental design was of random blocks (5 blocks) with three plants for each treatment. One plant was used as margin between the treatments and a row of plants among the blocks. The treatments consisted of control, 20, 40 and 80 mg/L of gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) + 10 ml/L of adhesive sulfactant and the pH of the used water was 6,2. The plants were treated with gibberellic acid during the winter (dry season) after 50 days without irrigation in the first year and after 60 days in the second year.. The gibberellic acid reduced the number of formed flowers (-81%) and increased the production of out-of-season fruits (+59,77% or +16,04 kg/pl).
nd years of second ratoon cane crop, by means of adapted curves. The research was performed in Morro Agudo, SP, Brazil from July 1995 to July 1997. The cultivar was the SP 70 -1143. As growth indicators the following biometric indexes were used: number of tillers, number of leaves, dry matter of stalks, and leaves and leaf area index (LAI). For each treatment, 4 areas were used, each one being considered a replication. Polynomial regression and non-linear regression were used to adjust the data to the growth curves. The growth in the first cycle was similar for the green and the burned canes. At the beginning of the second cycle the green cane growth was greater, while at the end, the growth was greater for the burned cane. Tillering of the green cane did not present significant differences that confirm the negative influence of the straw in the ratoon cane crop. The climatological factors, separately, did not promote changes in the growth cycles, that could identify a general tendency. The differences in the development expressed on the curve of growth from the 1 st to the 2 nd year are due to the climatological factors, for both, the green and the burned cane.
