The Covid-19 pandemic that is sweeping across the globe has caused increased anxiety. Studies in linguistics have found a variety of language expressions that convey people's anxiety and fear. However, there are only a few researchers that studied the use of language used in communication by the government, to enhance the citizens' morale and help them recover from psychological distress from the Covid-19 pandemic. This study focused on investigating the discursive strategies used by the Indonesian government spokesperson at daily press conferences during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study employed the Positive Discourse Analysis (PDA) framework. A total of 28 recorded press conference sessions that lasted between 25-45 minutes were analyzed through the identification, interpretation, and explanation stages. Identification was carried out through careful reading of the transcription of the government spokesperson's speech to find out the discursive strategy used by the spokesperson. The interpretation was done by grouping similar quotes with the same themes, based on the context of the discourse. The explanation was done by explaining, in a macro way, the situational aspects and social contexts that provide the background for the texts' production and relating them to the pandemic. The results of the study showed that the spokesperson made use of nomination, predication, argumentation, perspectivization and intensification, and mitigation strategies to deliver information to the public. The entire discursive strategies are used to improve the public's optimism and build solidarity of the citizens as a moral force to face the pandemic. Suggestions for future research about analysis of pandemic discourse employed by the government include corpus analysis, power representation and framing.
Critical reading awareness can empower readers through critical reading skills used to understand ideological messages and domination act in language practice. The aim of this research was to develop and test a critical reading learning model to enhance university students' critical awareness. This Research and Development study was carried out by following three main steps that were product development, product validation, and examination of product effectiveness. 56 students participated in this study. They came from the Indonesian Language Department, Negeri Makassar University, Indonesia. The qualitative data was analyzed with the use of domain analysis and the quantitative data was analyzed using t-test. The developed learning model was proven valid and feasible through experts' validation. In addition, the results of the effectiveness test indicated that the learning model could improve students' critical reading skills and students' critical reading awareness of understanding, evaluating, and responding to texts.
Tax avoidance is a business that is conducted legally by the company by utilizing existing loopholes in the tax regulations with the aim of minimizing or even avoiding tax payments. This research aimed to know and analyze the effect of political connections, fixed assets intensity, independent commissioners, profitability and leverage to tax avoidance. The method used is quantitative, where the data used is secondary data formed as financial statements of banking sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for the period 2014-2018. The sample determination used purposive sampling, so obtained financial statements that meet the research criteria of 172 observations. The data analysis technique used multiple linier regression analysis. The research result showed that political connections, fixed assets intensity, profitability and leverage affected to the tax avoidance. While independent commissioners is not affected to the tax avoidance
Gender Bias in Indonesian Language Textbook in Senior High School. This research to described gender bias based on the subject-object viewpoint and author-reader viewpoint of Sara Mills theory on textbook. The data of this research are vocabulary, clause, sentence, or paragraph that contain gender perspective and the source of the data of this research is reading text on the Indonesian language textbook for senior high school grade X by Kemendikbud, revised edition of 2017. Technique of data collection are reading and writing. The whole data collected were analyzed in depth and identified based on gender perspective. The results of this research are (1) forms of gender bias of the subject-object viewpoint are subordination and stereotyped to women, (2) forms of gender bias of the author-reader viewpoint, there are two aspects of the findings, namely indirect sweeping carried out by means of mediation and cultural code. Direct sweeping which uses first-person singular pronoun, third-person singular pronoun, and third-person plural pronoun.
Current control scheme is commonly used in high voltage direct current (HVDC) to transmit power delivery. This scheme is done by adjusting trigger angle to regulate direct current (DC) in thyristor devices. The adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) control is widely applied for start and fault operation. But, solution for transient response of DC current in HVDC system is not clearly studied before. In this paper, supplementary control (SC) based on ANFIS is proposed to improve the transient response of the current. The SC control is designed by learning-processes and SC parameters are obtained by data-training automatically. For current reference at 1.05 pu and up-ramp at 20 pu/s, maximum overshoot is achieved at 5.12% and 7.72% for the SC and proportional integral controller (PIC), respectively. When the up-ramp is increased to 28 pu/s, the maximum overshoot is achieved at 10.01% for the SC. While, the peak overshoot for the PIC is 14.28%.
Despite the earlier age at transplant, the previous urologic operations, and the high incidence of urinary tract infection after renal transplant, graft survival and functions after renal transplant were not significantly different between patients with abnormal and normal bladders over at least the first 10 years. Therefore, it is safe to transplant into abnormal bladders once they have been assessed, reconstructed if necessary, and managed appropriately.
Textbook discourse readability is primarily determined by three key factors: the text, the writer, and the reader. Textbook discourse readability from the reader aspect especially among students with poor reading ability is rarely studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate textbook discourse readability among junior high school students with poor reading ability based on gender, reading interest, and family socio-economic status. A quantitative survey was conducted on 257 respondents from Indonesia. The data were gathered using a questionnaire and a cloze test. The results showed that textbook discourse readability on all investigated variables was categorized into the frustration level. There was a significant difference in textbook discourse readability among students with poor reading ability based on gender, reading interest, and family socio-economic status. Female students, students with high reading interest, students with well-educated mothers, students with parents earning more than seven million rupiahs (equals to USD480/month) were reported to have a higher textbook discourse readability. These findings suggest the importance of considering students’ individual characteristics and family socio-economic background in writing a textbook and designing reading instructions in junior high schools.
