This paper aims to study about the query of femaleness in Indonesian folktales from the feminism approach. It is taken into account due to women’s subordination that allegedly implies the negation of femaleness. In particular, the perpetual story of Malin Kundang represents that owing to her weakness, a woman is a subordinate creature. It happens when Malin Kundang denies the appearance of her mother after a series of successes he makes. Another popular story, Sangkuriang, even depicts that due to her beauty, a woman is an object of sex. It is seen when Sangkuriang proposes Dayang Sumbi to be his wife because of his inability of recognising her as his mother after some year banishment. The subordination eventually drives the two women to struggle against it in order to defend their dignity. The mother of Malin Kundang spells him to be a stone and Dayang Sumbi overtly refuses Sangkuriang’s proposal. Their struggles are of course valued of the morality for wider public, too. Despite this, the tales remain a query of women’s existence, particularly that of femaleness. The truth that a woman is biologically and socially the mother of man is denied in order to sustain men’s superiority. By biologically it means that a woman is the undenied creature for her gifted power of childbirthing. It then socially gives her more power to sustain the generations and the social relationships. Furthermore, it is pivotal to investigate the feminist critical ideas about the essence of femaleness in the Indonesian folktales.
This study aims to find out female stereotypes depicted in the reconstructed stories of Cinderella in the children's storybook entitled Ketika Rapunzel Menjadi Rapinem (KRMP). These stories are mainly inspired by the classic fairy tale of Cinderella, which is then reconstructed through the archetype process. It is essential to study the stories due to the prevalent issue of female stereotypes. Women’s conditions in such reconstructed works certainly bring a perspective, especially the depiction of women, as existing social reflections. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method to support the goal. The data collection uses a purposive sampling technique by conducting in-depth readings on the reconstruction of Cinderella stories, representing women's stereotypes. The data is analysed using the feminism theory. As a result, the stories clearly and consistently define the stereotypes of women from their physical appearances, personality traits, domestic roles, and occupations. In this case, women's portrayal in the reconstructed versions openly continues to glorify physical beauty as a standard for women's appearance; on the other hand, they should also maintain femininity and do domestic works as housewives or caregivers.
This paper aimed to explain a practical programme utilised to enhance the students' English skills by designing English Islamic-tagged-media. It was relatively considerable due to low proficiency, low exposures, and psychological problems the students have, which undermine the ability. Therefore, the programme was concerned with the more straightforward and uncomplicated direction the students may perform for better English proficiency. The programme involved 23 students of high schools who reside in the two Muhammadiyah orphanages of Purwokerto residence. It principally conceptualised and integrated the English skills and the religious mission of Islamic values to produce the disciples of Islam and Muhammadiyah. Furthermore, the programme used a workshop method to intensively train and guide the students to design the English tag-lines that express the Islamic values on T-shirts' media. As a result, despite the difficulties in creating the expressions and printing the T-shirts, the programme has successfully run with the excellent performance the students made. They have shown their ideas and creativities in doing some exposures to their English skills and their Islamic knowledgeability
