Résumé Voir les artistes « tenir boutique », c’est voir Paris se transformer, se dessiner, se construire et se mettre en scène. L’étude des ateliers-boutiques d’artistes s’appuie sur une enquête ethnographique réalisée, entre 2003 et 2007, dans le quartier parisien de Belleville. Pour les artistes de Belleville, exposer dans le quartier n’a pas la même signification qu’exposer ailleurs dans la capitale. La question des boutiques d’artistes de Belleville pose la question parisienne dans son ensemble, comme enjeu des identités artistiques et spatiales.
Résumé Être artiste à Belleville recouvre une multitude de situations sociales, allant du peintre amateur investi dans les collectifs d’artistes, au sculpteur professionnel reconnu par les institutions artistiques, en passant par le photographe méconnu du monde de l’art et engagé dans le quartier. En dépit de cette diversité, les créateurs bellevillois sont souvent dépeints sous les traits d’un même personnage : un plasticien dont l’identité et le statut sont définis à travers son appartenance aux collectifs artistiques et sa relation au territoire. La représentation locale de l’artiste du quartier ne colle pas avec l’image traditionnellement véhiculée sur les créateurs et le monde de la création. L’artiste « traditionnel » caractérise un personnage dont le parcours professionnel se veut individuel et universel. Le créateur bellevillois, tel qu’il est représenté par les collectifs d’artistes locaux, est, a contrario, souvent défini à travers une identité collective et territoriale. Pourquoi adhérer aux associations locales de plasticiens ? Comment concilier carrière individuelle et engagement collectif ? Le quartier joue-t-il vraiment un rôle dans le parcours professionnel de l’artiste ? Que signifie être artiste à Belleville ?
