Cet article porte sur les cadres de santé hospitaliers du secteur public. Leur situation actuelle de cadres dits « intermédiaires » ou « de proximité » peut tout d’abord être comprise grâce à une approche sociohistorique permettant de retracer les grandes étapes de la construction de ce groupe professionnel, successivement confronté à de nombreux changements synonymes de laïcisation, professionnalisation puis managérialisation, notamment sous l’effet du New Public Management (NPM) tel qu’il a été appliqué à l’hôpital. Par ailleurs, l’analyse des parcours individuels met en lumière les processus de fabrique des cadres santé, souvent issu(e)s du groupe des infirmières, amenées à se convertir en manager, c’est-à-dire à rompre avec leur métier d’origine. Un tel tournant biographique apparaît d’ailleurs comme une des caractéristiques communes aux agents des différents services publics qui deviennent cadres (de proximité). À l’heure du NPM, cette forme de mutation professionnelle n’est pas sans causer de nombreux troubles identitaires, tant au niveau collectif qu’au niveau individuel.
