This paper extends research on algorithmic management by examining mechanisms of compliance. Algorithmic management has predominantly been analysed in terms of the exercise of disciplinary power over workers and rational control of labour. Facing algorithms, platform workers would be in a situation of fear, passivity and frustration. In this paper, we utilise the Foucauldian framework of ‘dispositive’ in order to reconceptualise platforms as exerting both rational and normative control. Based on a qualitative case study of the food‐delivery platform Deliveroo, we underscore that algorithmic rational control, although fallible, is being reinforced by techniques of subjectification. Several dispositives on the platform, such as the pay‐per‐delivery and shift picker systems, generate an active mobilisation of workers. Our discussion highlights the governmentality power of algorithmic management, which builds consent by promoting a hyper‐meritocratic ideal of justice.

How do organizational settings influence learning mechanisms and their outcomes? Based on a 26-month online and offline ethnography, the article specifically analyses couriers’ learning in the context of food-delivery platform work, marked by the heterogeneity of the working crowd, the gig nature of the job and the digitally mediated, individualized and automated management apparatus. Drawing on social learning theory, and in particular on communities of practice (CoPs), the results of the study unpack how the digital nature of online peer discussion groups enables three interrelated learning mechanisms (sharing, symphonizing and shaping). The digitalness of CoPs indeed allows for a high degree of responsiveness in exchanges and a commutativity of shared knowledge that overcome the structural barriers to social learning inherent in the low-skilled platform context. The present study finally challenges the widespread approach that views online worker groups as a potential locus for resistance; its findings suggest that they also indirectly contribute to maintaining power relations through the social learning processes they enable.

L’instrumentation de gestion des plateformes numériques peut-elle être capacitante et concilier la performance avec le développement des travailleurs ? Si oui, quelles en sont les caractéristiques ? Ces questions présentent de nombreux enjeux. En effet, les plateformes numériques de travail ressortent au contraire comme généralement incapacitantes, qu’elles disciplinent les comportements en multipliant les outils de contrôle algorithmique, ou qu’elles engendrent des situations d’anomie en recourant massivement aux mécanismes de coordination du marché. Afin de questionner ces limites et proposer une troisième voie visant à identifier les caractéristiques d’une instrumentation capacitante des plateformes, nous avons mené une étude de cas qualitative de la plateforme Airbnb Experience. Nos résultats mettent en évidence l’importance de la subsidiarité, en interdépendance avec les principes de flexibilité et de transparence interne, comme caractéristique distinctive des outils de gestion ouverts constitutifs des environnements capacitants. Le principe de subsidiarité implique la mise en place d’outils optionnels d’aide et de suppléance, venant contrebalancer les dispositifs de management algorithmique et pallier les risques d’anomie sur les plateformes qui recourent principalement aux mécanismes du marché.
