Antibodies to Encephalitozoon cuniculi were found in wild arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus), feral mink (Mustela vison), wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and house mice (Mus musculus) in Iceland. Animals with antibodies were found throughout the country. No lesions attributable to encephalitozoonosis were found in adult animals necropsied. However, one arctic fox cub with a neurological disorder had pathological and serological evidence of encephalitozoonosis.
The moderate immune responses seen in this study indicate that previous exposure to mycoplasmas is a challenge for vaccination of lambs against M. ovipneumoniae. However, an alternative vaccination strategy, e.g. utilizing a recombinant vaccine, may overcome this vaccination hurdle in endemic regions and we suggest a possible vaccine candidate.
several outbreaks of food poisoning in humans occurred in Iceland, that were traced to salmonella contamination of singed sheep heads. This prompted us to study the prevalence of salmonella infection in sheep and to trace where and how infection might have occurred. Faecal, intestinal contents and tonsillar samples were collected in the spring and autumn from sheep on 50 farms in the southwestern part of the country, where salmonellosis had been detected and from 5 farms in the northwestern part of the country. All faecal samples from the southwest were negative, whereas samples from 3 farms obtained in the autumn in the northwest were positive. Tonsillae taken in the autumn were positive in sheep from 3 farms in the southwest and 2 in the northwest. Our results show that salmonella infection is rare in Icelandic sheep but healthy carriers may harbour the bacteria in tonsillae. Salmonella was not detected in drainage from slaughterhouses nor in singed sheep heads.
Flavobacterium species cause significant disease in salmonid farming worldwide, typically seen as mortality in sac fry and later as necrosis and ulceration in fingerlings and fry. In this study, we sampled Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and Arctic char Salvelinus alpinus from 5 Icelandic fish farms in 2014 and 2017, where flavobacteria were suspected to cause disease. The objective of the study was to identify and characterise the bacteria by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene and multilocus sequence type housekeeping genes. We found 5 distinct groups of flavobacteria: 3 that were homogeneous and appeared to persist in the fish farms between 2014 and 2017 and 2 that were heterogeneous and transient. Flavobacterium psychrophilum could be isolated from diseased Arctic char from all 5 fish farms in both 2014 and 2017. However, while the other 4 Flavobacterium sp. groups were isolated from Atlantic salmon, water and roe, F. psychrophilum could not be isolated from these samples. This indicates that flavobacteria other than F. psychrophilum may be the primary cause of fin and tail rot in Icelandic Atlantic salmon fry.
