Com o surgimento da Abordagem Comunicativa, em meados dos anos 1980 do século passado, a questão do uso da tradução em sala de aula de língua estrangeira (LE) foi deslocada para as áreas periféricas do debate linguístico. Os manuais de linguística aplicada e de didática das LE ignoraram durante muito tempo a questão, considerando-a um problema já resolvido, ou seja, era comumente aceito pela comunidade científica que o uso da tradução em sala de aula era desnecessário e até desaconselhável. Com este artigo, pretende-se reabrir a discussão analisando os motivos não somente linguísticos, mas também ideológicos e políticos que essa discussão envolve, e reavaliar as vantagens desta técnica didática. Começa-se ilustrando de que forma as várias abordagens para o ensino de LE têm considerado a tradução desde meados do século XVII até a época contemporânea. Verifica-se como, não obstante a tradução tenha perdido progressivamente seu papel de técnica eficaz no ensino/aprendizagem de uma LE, é, porém, bastante comum ver professores que usam a língua materna (LM), e estudantes que se aproximam da LE mediante o uso da tradução. Conclui-se esta análise sugerindo uma série de possíveis atividades didáticas que contemplem o uso da tradução em uma sala de aula de LE.
resumo: Neste artigo investiga-se o trabalho tradutório de D. Pedro II. Ao longo de sua vida demonstrou grande interesse pelas línguas. Falava alemão, italiano, espanhol, francês, latim, hebraico e tupi-guarani. Lia grego, árabe, sânscrito e provençal. Fez traduções do grego, do hebraico, do árabe, do francês, do alemão, do italiano e do inglês. Objetiva--se delinear o processo criativo do tradutor através da Crítica Genética e dos Estudos Descritivos da Tradução, pois ambos privilegiam o processo em relação ao produto final. As principais fontes documentais em que se baseiam as investigações aqui propostas são manuscritos autógrafos de traduções diretas do árabe, italiano, espanhol, francês e sânscrito, o diário do imperador, além de cartas e livros da sua biblioteca pessoal. Pretende--se reconstruir não somente o perfil de tradutor de D. Pedro II, suas ideias e atitudes acerca da atividade tradutória, mas também o estudo daquela rede única de contatos, leituras e influências procedentes de várias culturas, não somente europeias, que o imperador conseguiu tecer. palavras-chave: D. APRESENTAÇÃOEste dossiê da revista Cadernos de Tradução é inteiramente voltado à relação entre tradução e ensino/aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras. A ideia de um dossiê específico sobre a análise teóri-ca e prática desse binômio nasce da rejeição, a nosso ver injusta, que a questão do uso da tradução em sala de aula e, consequentemente, do uso da língua materna (LM), teve desde o surgimento do método direto.Ao longo do segundo semestre de 2010, quando ministramos a disciplina "Tradução e Aprendizagem de Língua Estrangeira" na Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução na UFSC, deparamo-nos com uma situação paradoxal: há escassez de bibliografia referente ao tema nos últimos vinte anos, o que não corresponde ao grande e sempre crescente interesse por parte dos alunos e, sobretudo, por parte de alunos também docentes de Língua Estrangeira (LE). Observamos, na ocasião, que, com base em sua prática cotidiana, os docentes-alunos demonstram, em geral, grande interesse em relação à tradução como técnica didática, fato que os textos especí-ficos, tanto do domínio da tradução quanto da linguística aplicada, dos últimos vinte anos ignoram quase completamente.Faz-se necessário, então, retomar essa discussão, tentar entender a origem desse preconceito teórico-didático e apresentar as tentativas mais recentes, tanto no Brasil, quanto na Itália e na Inglaterra, de reabri-la.
