This study analyses tokens of Dissension in samples of discussions among German speakers regarding its linguistic expression and the procedures used to maintain the due course of an interaction, which GOFFMAN denominated face-work. A set of face-work strategies was defined based upon the four super strategies of face-work proposed by BROWN & LEVINSON: on record, positive redress, negative redress and off record. Dissension was defined as a propositional attitude of a speaker referring to topics or attitudes imputed by him to his partner in conversation. According to its scope, Dissension was classified in four categories, which proved themselves influent upon the choice of the facework strategies used to express them. In general, the least represented strategy is the Dissension bold on record, followed by strategies off record. A remarkable balance between positive and negative redress must be noted as well. As to the linguistic expression of Dissension, it has been concluded that there are no specific linguistic means to that, although the great majority of the occurrences in the corpus displays semantically negative lexical elements. viii CAPÍTULO II-MATERIAL E MÉTODO 2.1 Corpus 2.1.1 Definição do corpus da pesquisa 2.1.1.1 O gênero "Discussão" 2.1.1.2 A Dissensão em Discussões 2.1.2 Descrição do corpus da pesquisa 2.1.3 Caracterização dos inquéritos 2.
Interjections and onomatopoeia receive very little attention from language studies, and grammars and dictionaries very often restrict themselves to presenting a stereotypical definition and a few examples. Loathed in traditional literature, such expressions found their "natural habitat" in comics, where they became indispensable to the language of this genre. This short experiment about interjections and onomatopoeia in mangas (Japanese comics) translated into German and Brazilian Portuguese shows that, although there are basic phonetic patterns common to both languages according to what they refer to, the found interjections and onomatopoeia differ a lot, which stresses their condition as linguistic signs, even if distinct from other lexical elements.

At the same time that language is fundamental for establishing and maintaining social-cultural groups, it is also influenced by them to the extent that a number of social-cultural conventions are unconsciously mirrored in their members' linguistic manifestations. Different expectations regarding conversational style in interactions between speakers from different cultural groups can lead to misunderstandings, conflicts or even to the creation and perpetuation of stereotypes. This paper will present some examples and considerations of conversational style and interculturality in general and about conversational style in German and Brazil in particular.
