Considerando as características estruturais do dossel, o consumo de forragem e a produtividade, estes capins requerem práticas de manejo diferenciadas: o capim-marandu deve ser manejado entre 25 e 40 cm de altura e o capim-xaraés a 40 cm.Palavras-chave: acúmulo de forragem, Brachiaria brizantha, consumo de forragem, manejo de pastagem, oferta de forragem, valor nutritivo Animal performance, forage yield and structural characteristics in the palisadegrass cvs. marandu and xaraés submitted to grazing intensities ABSTRACT -The objectives were to evaluate the forage yield, the structural characteristics, the herbage intake, the grazing behavior and beef cattle performance in the palisadegrass cvs. Marandu and Xaraés pastures submitted to three grazing intensities. Treatments presented similar DAR (66.12 kg of DM/ha) between pastures, with higher production in the summer, followed by spring and autumn, which were not different from each other, and the winter with the lowest value: 108.6; 71.7; 54.2; 30.6 kg of DM/ha, respectively. In the CA0 treatment, the highest FO and the lowest SR were obtained (4.0 AU/ha). The highest SR and lowest FO were observed in treatments with nitrogen fertilization, without difference among them. The APP in the mixture was higher in the spring, and for the CA0 treatment, with visual estimations were always higher in function of the lower dry matter percentage of this legume. For ADG was higher for CA200 and C200 treatments in relation to CA100 and CA0 with values of 0.51, 0.51, 0.42 and 0.38 kg/day, respectively. The GPH were above 1000 kg/ha/year and the summer presented the highest gain (221.4 kg/ha).
Studies of plant responses to defoliation are important to develop pasture management strategies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the population density of basal, aerial and reproductive tillers, tiller appearance and mortality rates, forage accumulation and sward structure in Marandu grass pastures under different grazing intensities. The experimental period was from January to June 2006, divided in three seasons: summer, autumn and winter. The pastures were continuously grazed using variable stocking rates. The grazing intensities corresponded to 15, 30 and 45 cm of sward height. The experiment was arranged in a complete randomized block design with three treatments and two replicates. The sward heights were measured twice a week. The response variables were: forage accumulation, forage mass and its morphological components; and population densities of basal (TPDb), aerial (TPDa) and reproductive (TPDr) tillers. The highest TPDb (P > 0.05) was recorded for the shortest sward pasture, and the highest TPDr (P<0.05) for the tallest sward pasture. Swards showed a tiller size/density compensation mechanism and, consequently, the forage accumulation was similar (P > 0.05) among the grazing intensities. Pasture with a sward height of 35 cm had 94% of sun light interception. The highest variations in forage accumulation and sward structure were more influenced by seasonal differences than by grazing intensities. Pastures of Marandu grass showed large flexibility in grazing management, which allowed it to be maintained at sward heights between 15 and 35 cm.
Tanzânia-1) Grazed at Different Heights ABSTRACT-Crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) contents were assessed in the leaf blade and stem + leaf sheath fractions of Tanzaniagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Tanzania-1) managed at four sward heights (20, 40, 50 and 65 cm). The grazing method was the continuous stocking and variable stocking rate, and used Nelore steers with an average weight of 340 kg. The completely randomized experimental design was used with two replications, and five evaluations were performed during a period of 112 days. The CP, IVDMD, Ca, P and Mg contents decreased while NDF, ADF and K concentrations increased in the leaf blade and stem + leaf sheath fraction in response to grazing height as well as period of evaluation. Leaf blades exibited higher quality than stem + leaf sheath regardless of grazing height and evaluation time. Tanzaniagrass grazed to 40 and 50 cm presents good chemical composition and IVDMD.
ABSTRACT. Influence of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on the yield and regrowth characteristic of Marandu grass (Brachiaria brizantha c Stapf cv. Marandu). The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on the regrowth, tiller density, tiller weight, dry matter yield (DMY) and green leaf blade dry matter (LBDM), under levels of nitrogen (0; 200; 400; 600kg/ha of N) and phosphorus (0; 50; 100; 150; 200Kg/ha of P2O5) of Marandu grass (Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst) Stapf cv. Marandu), during the summer (SP) and winter periods (WP). The experimental design was randomized blocks using factorial design 4 x 5, with three replications. Nitrogen fertilization produced (p<0.05) a linear increase in the SP and a quadratic response in the WP. The DMY and leaves dry matter yield (LBDM) had a quadratic response and a linear increase in the WP, by crescent levels of nitrogen fertilization (p<0.05). However, tiller density showed a linear decrease, by phosphorus (p<0.05) at RP, and a quadratic response at WP. The weight of tiller and root was not statistically different (p>0.05) by crescent levels of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization in both periods. Results showed that nitrogen fertilization in pasture of Marandu grass increase DMY and LBDM, during the SP, and phosphorus fertilization did not affect the analyzed variables.
ABSTRACT. Influence of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on the chemical composition of marandu grass (Brachiaria brizantha (Hochts) Stapf cv. Marandu). The carried out to estimate the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus' fertilization on the crude protein (CP) content, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), and phosphorus' content in dry matter of Marandu grass (Brachiaria brizantha Stapf cv. Marandu) in summer period (SP) and winter period (WP), under crescent levels of nitrogen (0; 200; 400; 600kgha ). The CP and P content showed a increase by crescent levels of nitrogen (P<0.05), with a linear effect and a quadratic response, respectively, at SP. However, the NDF showed a decrease in two periods (P<0.05), and at RP it showed an association effect of nitrogen/phosphorus, and a linear effect by crescent levels of nitrogen at WP. The ADF showed a linear decrease at SP and WP, by crescent levels of nitrogen. The nitrogen and phosphorus' fertilization did not make better the IVDMD, however, there was a lower decrease at FDA, FDN.
