A presente pesquisa é resultado do processo de investigação sobre as influências de atividades desenvolvidas por docentes e estudantes da Escola Técnica de Saúde na sala de espera do Hospital Odontológico da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, junto aos pacientes da comunidade local, bem como seus hábitos de higiene bucal e de seus acompanhantes. Por meio de um questionário com questões abertas, respondido pelos acompanhantes de menores de dezoito anos, investigaram-se também as expectativas e o nível de satisfação em relação ao atendimento realizado. Os resultados obtidos demonstram a importância do desenvolvimento desse tipo de projeto de extensão na promoção da saúde e do bem-estar, não somente dos pacientes, como também daqueles que os acompanham ao atendimento, aproximando-os da equipe de trabalho, mediante ações lúdicas e educativas.
Identificar o comportamento ansioso de crianças no consultório odontológico pode contribuir de forma a possibilitar ao dentista adequações durante o atendimento que resultem em consultas assintomáticas. O objetivo desse estudo foi verificar a presença de ansiedade em crianças submetidas pela primeira vez ao atendimento e tratamento odontológicos, analisando suas alterações fisiológicas e psicológicas, medidas pela pressão arterial, frequência cardíaca, cortisol salivar e escala Venham Picture Test (VPT). Trinta e duas crianças que nunca haviam ido ao dentista participaram do estudo e foram avaliadas em casa e no consultório odontológico. Cento e trinta e oito amostras de saliva e aferições de pressão arterial e frequência cardíaca foram coletadas em casa e no consultório antes e após o atendimento e trinta e duas escalas VPT aplicadas. As amostras salivares foram analisadas por meio de ensaio imunoenzimático. Quinze crianças apresentaram algum grau de ansiedade de acordo com a escala VPT e seus níveis de cortisol salivar foram maiores antes da primeira consulta. Em relação a pressão arterial essa se mostrou mais elevada significativamente antes da primeira consulta quando comparada com os outros momentos das coletas. Na amostra estudada verificou-se que a primeira consulta odontológica da criança foi geradora de ansiedade e esta se apresentou por meio de alterações psicofisiológicas.
