A new genus of the diatom family Eunotiaceae Kützing is described along with a new species. Eunotioforma Kociolek & Burliga gen. nov. shares asymmetry about the apical axis with other members of the family (except Peronia de Brébisson & Arnott ex Kitton), and is distinguished from other genera in the family by having its raphe system almost entirely on the valve face and transapical striae interrupted near the center line of the valve. Eunotioforma mattogrossiana sp. nov. is described from the Do Sangue River, an oligotrophic and acidic stream situated in the State of Mato Grosso, Central Western region of Brazil. When compared with previously described taxa, the new species differs with respect to size, striae densities, areolar densities and an uncommonly high number of rimoportulae per valve. Seven other taxa are assigned to the new genus, and the systematic position of Eunotioforma and the evolution of the raphe within the family is discussed.
This study aimed to describe the composition and distribution of the epilithic diatom community in thirteen sampling sites in the Arroio Grande hydrographical sub-basin, RS, between October 2012 and March 2013. Samples were cleaned in oxygen peroxide and mounted on permanent slides for identifi cation. The diatom fl ora was composed of 106 species in 23 families and 41 genera. The most representative families and genera in taxa richness were Cymbellaceae (12 taxa), Naviculaceae (11), Sellaphoraceae (10), Gomphonema Ehreberg (10), Sellaphora Mereschkowsky, Nitzchia Hassall (seven), Navicula Bory, and Pinnularia C.G. Ehrenberg (six). Morphometric data for each species are presented. The upper reaches of the river basin presented greater specifi c richness than the lower stretches. This is the fi rst record of the diatom fl ora in this hydrographic basin.
-(Diatoms on Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker), an introduced mollusk in Guaíba Lake, southern Brazil). The taxonomic composition of diatoms present on the mollusk Limnoperna fortunei (golden mussel), introduced into Guaíba Lake through ballast water, from ships coming from Argentina, was analyzed with the intention of identifying and evaluating the occurrence of the species in relation to habitat and origin. Mollusks were obtained from a floating wooden platform and on floats situated in the northern region of Guaíba Lake, during the period of August to November 2005. The diatoms were scraped from the shells, analysed under microscope and were oxidized for identification. Results have shown that the molluskan shell may be a favorable habitat for diatom, considering the species richness. Diatom association did not demonstrate to be restricted this habitat, since the most frequent species: Cocconeis fluviatilis Wall., C. placentula Ehr. var. lineata (Ehr.) Heurck, Encyonema silesiacum (Bleisch) Mann, Eunotia pseudosudetica Metz., Lange-Bert. & Garcia-Rodr., Gomphonema parvulum (Kütz.) Kütz., Hydrosera whampoensis (Schw.) Deby, Luticola goeppertiana (Bleisch) Mann, Melosira varians Ag., Navicula symmetrica Patr., Nitzschia palea (Kütz.) Smith, Pinnularia acrosphaeria Smith, Planothidium frequentissimum (Lange-Bert.) Round & Bukh., Pleurosira laevis (Her.) Comp. and Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Comp. were found on rocky substrata and in the plankton of the Guaíba Lake hydrographic basin. Therefore, Eunotia pseudosudetica, Luticola dapalis (Freng.) Mann and Gomphonema mexicanum Grun. are taxa only reported, until now, for the Rio de la Plata, Argentina and their occurrences in Guaíba Lake support the hypothesis of a recent introduction of these species through ballast water as L. fortunei.
