A senescência e a senilidade são temas cada vez mais explorados, considerando o crescente aumento da população idosa no mundo, principalmente no Brasil. A assistência ao idoso deve prezar pela manutenção da qualidade de vida, considerando o processo de perdas próprias do envelhecimento e as possibilidades de prevenção, manutenção e reabilitação do seu estado de saúde. Conhecer o cotidiano dos idosos tem sido um desafio para os profissionais de saúde para implementar programas e ações que visem alcançar a manutenção do equilíbrio no processo saúde-doença, e é nessa busca que temos envidado esforços para contribuir, de forma efetiva, nas estratégias de fortalecimento dos idosos e seus familiares, de forma a tornar possível o desencadeamento de ações na promoção da saúde, principalmente considerando que o desafio para este milênio é construir uma consciência coletiva para alcançar uma sociedade para todas as idades, com justiça e garantia plena de direitos. Health care for the edlery should value to maintain quality of life, considering the loss process particular of aging and the possiblities to prevent, maintenain and rehabilitate their health condition. Knowing the everyday lives of the elderly has been a challenge for health care professsionals regardint the implementation of programs and actions that aim to maintain the balance of the health-disease process, and it is in this search that we have made efforts to constibute, effectively, with the strategies to strengthen the edlerly and their relatives so it becomes possible to trigger health promotion actions, especially considering that the challenge for the millenium is to build collective awareness to achieve a society for all ages, with justice and the guarantee of full rights. resumenLa senectud y senilidad constituyen temas ampliamente investigados, considerando el aumento de la población anciana en el mundo, principalmente en Brasil. La atención al anciano debe velar por el mantenimiento de su calidad de vida, estimando el proceso de pérdidas propias del envejecimiento y las posibilidades de prevención, mantenimiento y rehabilitación de su salud. Conocer la rutina del anciano se ha tornado un desafío para los profesionales de salud en lo que atañe a implementar programas y acciones que apunten a alcanzar el equilibrio del proceso salud-enfermedad, y en tal búsqueda hemos efectuado esfuerzos para contribuir efectivamente en las estrategias de mejoramiento integral del anciano y sus familiares, a fin de hacer posible el desencadenamiento de acciones promotoras de salud, considerando principalmente que el desafío para este milenio es construir una conciencia colectiva que alcance a una sociedad para todas las edades, con justicia y plena garantía de derechos.

Objective: To identify the prevalence and factors associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among the elderly. Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted in a municipality of São Paulo from 2011 to 2012. A structured questionnaire was administered to 382 elderly people, and their blood samples were collected to test for syphilis, hepatitis B, and HIV/AIDS. Data were analyzed using the logistic regression model, with discussion based on the benchmark of vulnerability. Results: The prevalence of STIs was 3.4%, with 2.6%, 0.5%, and 0.3% prevalence of syphilis, hepatitis B, and HIV infection, respectively. Sex and a history of STIs were independently associated with this outcome: women had 12 times more likely to contract STIs than men, and the elderly with a history of these infections were 5 times more likely to contract an STI than those without a history of these infections. Conclusion: The results indicated individual and programmatic vulnerabilities of the elderly to STIs. It is essential to suggest strategies that encourage women to negotiate safe sex practices as well as educating healthcare professionals on this subject. ResumoObjetivo: Identificar a prevalência e fatores associados às Infecções Sexualmente Transmissíveis (IST) em idosos. Métodos: Estudo transversal, realizado em município do interior paulista, entre 2011-2012. Aplicou-se questionário estruturado a 382 idosos, coletou-se exame para sífilis, hepatite B e HIV/Aids. Análise de dados foi realizada por modelo de regressão logística, com discussão a partir do referencial da vulnerabilidade. Resultados: A prevalência de IST foi 3,4%, sendo 2,6%, 0,5% e 0,3% de sífilis, hepatite B e infecção pelo HIV, respectivamente. Associaram-se de forma independente a este desfecho sexo e história de IST: mulheres tiveram 12 vezes mais chance que homens e, em idosos com história destas infecções, houve cinco vezes mais chance de IST, quando comparados àqueles sem história. Conclusão: Os resultados apontam para vulnerabilidade individual e programática dos idosos às IST. Sugeremse estratégias que favoreçam às mulheres negociarem a prática de sexo seguro e a educação permanente dos profissionais na temática.

Objective: to investigate elderly living with HIV/Aids and health professionals, what are the reasons that lead to late diagnosis of HIV infection in the elderly. Method: prospective, qualitative study, conducted at a specialized outpatient clinic with elderly living with HIV/Aids, diagnosed age over 60 years and in the Family Health Strategy units with nurses and physicians. Data were collected through interviews and verifi ed by content analysis, using the theoretical framework of vulnerability. Results: a total of 11 elderly, 11 nurses and 12 physicians participated in the study. Three empirical categories emerged: the late diagnosis of HIV happens against the health service; invisibility of the sexuality of the elderly; and weaknesses in the anti-HIV serology request for the elderly. Conclusion: there are health professionals who see the elderly as asexual, causing the diagnosis of HIV to happen in the secondary and tertiary service instead of primary care. Método: estudo prospectivo, qualitativo, realizado em ambulatório especializado com idosos vivendo com HIV/aids, diagnosticados com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos e nas Unidades com Estratégia Saúde da Família com enfermeiros e médicos. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas e verifi cados por análise de conteúdo, utilizando o referencial teórico da vulnerabilidade. Resultados: participaram 11 idosos, 11 enfermeiros e 12 médicos. Emergiram três categorias empíricas: o diagnóstico tardio do HIV acontece na contramão do serviço de saúde; invisibilidade da sexualidade do idoso; e fragilidades na solicitação da sorologia anti-HIV para os idosos. Conclusão: há profi ssionais de saúde que percebem os idosos como assexuados, fazendo que o diagnóstico do HIV aconteça no serviço secundário e terciário e não na atenção primária. Objective:To identify vulnerabilities of elderly people with HIV/AIDS and the trajectory that they follow until reaching the diagnosis of the disease. Method: Qualitative research conducted in specialized clinics in the state of São Paulo, from January to June 2011. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 elderly people who were found to be infected with the virus at the age of 60 years or older. The interviews were analyzed using content analysis. Results: In this process four categories emerged, then analyzed with reference to the theoretical framework of vulnerability. Conclusion: Late diagnosis of HIV infection or AIDS among the elderly happens in the secondary or tertiary service. Issues related to sexual life of the elderly are only questioned by health professionals after the diagnosis, also the time that condom use becomes absolute. It is believed that the investigation of the vulnerability of the elderly to HIV/AIDS allows for carrying out appropriate interventions for this population.

The results showed that certain beliefs generated worry and confusion in parents, who blamed head lice as the cause of various health problems which were not due to this insect.

Objective:To verify the association between the level of comfort of the caregiver and socio-demographic variables related to caregiving, and the patient’s functional status and symptoms. Method:Cross-sectional study with non-probabilistic intentional sample. The instruments Palliative Performance Scale (score 0 to 100%), Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (symptom scores from zero to ten) and Holistic Comfort Questionnaire (total score ranging from 49 to 294 and mean score from 1 to 6) were used. The relationship between comfort scores and independent variables was calculated by multiple linear regression. Results:Fifty informal caregivers participated in the study - 80% were female, 32% were 60 years old or older, 36% were children of the patient, 58% had paid work and 60% did not have help in the care. The mean overall comfort was 4.52 points. A better functional status of the patients was associated with higher levels of comfort of the caregivers. Older caregivers who received helped in the care activities presented higher comfort scores. Conclusion:The level of comfort of caregivers of cancer patients receiving palliative care was associated with socio-demographic variables and patients’ functional status and symptoms.

Resumo: O objetivo geral do presente estudo foi descrever a experiência de construção e aplicação de uma proposta pedagógica no campo da educação sexual, fundamentada em algumas premissas contidas na concepção de Paulo Freire, visando atender adolescentes de uma comunidade carente do interior paulista. A partir dos questionamentos iniciais levantados pelos jovens foram realizados quatro encontros focando questões sobre sexualidade, anatomia e fisiologia humana, métodos anticoncepcionais e DST/Aids. Com a realização desse trabalho, os jovens tiveram oportunidade de participar de um processo educativo que possibilitou, pelo resgate de suas próprias experiências e crenças, a reflexão sobre sua autonomia na vivência de uma sexualidade saudável, respeitando a si próprio e ao outro.Palavras-chave: Proposta pedagógica. Abstract:The general objective of this study was to describe the experience of the development pedagogy for sex education, based on assumptions contained in the work of Freire, seeking to assist adolescents from the periphery of a city in the interior from São Paulo. We opted for an action-research based pedagogic model from Freire. Starting initial questioning of the youths four interviews were carried out concentrating on questions about sexuality, anatomy and human physiology, birth-control methods and sexually transmitted diseases. With the completion of this work, the youths had the opportunity to participate in an educational process through the examination of their own experiences and beliefs, making it possible to reflect about their autonomy within the experiences of a healthy sexuality, one which respects itself and values the other.
