BackgroundStudies about work ability have grown in importance owing to the worldwide aging of active populations. Research has shown that measuring work ability has a predictive value in cases of long-term sickness absence and early retirement. Our goal was to analyze the work ability and associated factors of civil servants from a higher education institution in Brazil. The participants in this cross-sectional study were 600 technical-administrative workers at a public university. Work ability was measured using the work ability index.ResultsThe participants were as follows: 51.8 % male; mean age of 45 years (SD = ±11); married or in a stable union (61.5 %); holding a graduate degree (56.7 %); having only one job (83.3 %), working 40 h a week or less (78.6 %); not working evenings (79.8 %); and having direct contact with the public (58.3 %). The prevalence of reduced work ability was 13.9 %. The following factors were found to be associated with reduced work ability: age 50 years old or above (PR = 2.58; 95 % CI 1.25–5.09); female (PR = 2.77; 95 % CI 1.25–3.60); education up to secondary school (PR = 2.37; 95 % CI 1.13–3.59); overall poor self-assessed health (PR = 2.96; 95 % CI 1.32–3.93); signs and symptoms of depression (PR = 4.86; 95 % CI 2.23–6.55); sedentariness (PR = 3.00; 95 % CI 1.38–4.68) and poor social support at work (PR = 4.01; 95 % CI 1.66–4.37).ConclusionsMost of the participants showed good work ability, but some subjects had reduced work ability. This study makes a contribution to expanding the discussion about the factors associated with work ability toward proposing actions for maintaining that ability or helping recovery in the case of diminished ability. Such actions can help reduce work absenteeism and early retirement, both of which have a social and economic impact in Brazil. Studying the determinants of work ability and recommendations to address those determinants will help efforts to improve the quality of life of individuals, both at work and personally, and promote healthy aging.
This article analyzes a teaching experience in the course of Nursing Administration at a Federal University, with fourth-year students majoring in Nursing. Based on the conception by which unit and care managements are associated, since nurses who manage funds should typically aim at the assistance process and cannot lose sight of the assistance quality, students built a health education proposal to be developed with adolescents at a public school by integrating basic health unit, school, and university. Through this work, students were able to associate theory and practice by carrying out an exercise comprehending planning, decision-making, leadership, teamwork, evaluation, and control.
ABSTRACT | Background:The workers' health profile is undergoing change affecting their work ability, which represents a health problem in Brazil and worldwide. Aim: To perform a literature review on work ability and associated factors among professionals in Brazil. Methods: A systematic review of articles published in Brazil from 1999 to 2015 was performed in databases Virtual Health Library, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, using terms "capacidade de trabalho", "capacidade para o trabalho", "avaliação da capacidade de trabalho", "desempenho do trabalho", "work capacity evaluation", "work capacity", "work ability" and "work ability index". Results: From the total number of articles located (n=1,479) 59 were selected for analysis after application of the insclusion and exclusion criteria. Among the analyzed studies 12.1% reported a prevalence of adequate work ability and 1.7% of inadequate work ability. Another group of studies analyzed the Work Ability Index (WAI) and expressed its results in categories (poor, moderate, good, high). In about 1.7% of the studies the work ability estimates corresponded to categories moderate and poor; in 5.2% to category moderate; in 32.8% to category good; and in 10.3% to category high. Conclusion: Work ability is a relevant indicator as a function of its implications for the worke...
This cross-sectional research aimed to analyze the psychological demand and work control self-reported by the Education (n = 319, 39.7%), low work demand (n = 274, 34.1%), high work demand (n = 116, 14.4%) and active work (n = 95, 11.8%). There were contributions from the investigation on the health of these workers insofar as they provided a diagnosis of the category. There is a recommendation for such data to support interventions to empower them and retailor jobs.
Rev. APS. 2018 jul/set; 21(3): 355 -364. The study was done through an integrative review in the Virtual Health Library, selecting 68 articles. It was noted that the Southeast region continues as a scientific hub, and that most of the studies do not have a significant level of evidence. Over the years, there has been a small increase in the number of studies and greater evidence of the effectiveness and efficiency of ICP in several areas. However, problems related to poor professional training, bad management of the system, and concepts rooted in allopathic medicine remain, and hinder the expansion of ICP in Brazil.
