O objetivo deste artigo é evidenciar como os pesquisadores brasileiros abordaram as políticas públicas participativas nos últimos anos, elaborando algumas categorizações teóricas sobre as experiências participativas a partir da literatura relevante, para em seguida avaliar seus limites diante das transições e dos dilemas do contexto político, especialmente no que se refere às mudanças no perfil do neoliberalismo. Para isso, na primeira parte, apresentamos um breve histórico das experiências participativas no âmbito da administração pública e políticas públicas no Brasil. Na segunda parte, interrogamos como os pesquisadores brasileiros trataram a questão dos novos arranjos institucionais participativos e sua dinâmica nos últimos anos a partir de um levantamento não sistemático dos artigos teóricos sobre o tema publicados entre 1980 e 2020, para apresentar duas vertentes predominantes de investigação: a analítica e a crítica. Na terceira parte, realizamos uma discussão sobre a recente virada conservadora e o recrudescimento do neoliberalismo, que apresenta uma nova face e ameaça a participação social no Brasil, e suas repercussões nas vertentes de investigação identificadas. Nas considerações finais, apresentamos alguns limites do artigo, bem como novas questões para discussão e debate.
