Objective. To assess the effectiveness of intervention with the Nintendo® Wii (NW) as a complementary therapy for rehabilitation of gross motor function and balance in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). Method. Case study with 2 patients with clinical diagnosis of spastic diparetic CP, classified by the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and evaluated through the scales Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS) and Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-88). They undergone into a standardized intervention with NW twice a week for 20 sessions, after physical therapy. Results. Both the subjects 1 and 2 showed an increase in the score of the scales PBS and GMFM-88. Conclusions. The results suggest that the intervention with the NW is effective to increase the gross motor function in children with moderate performance and balance in patients with mild impairment; however, it requires a study with a larger population to characterize the NW as a complementary tool of rehabilitation.
Purpose. This study aims at showing the effects in muscle activity and arm function under the influence of the inhibitory muscle technique of the Kinesio tape method in healthy muscles. Methods. Overall, 20 apparently healthy subjects underwent the procedures 3 times, in 3 different tape conditions: no tape, Kinesio tape, and non-elastic tape. The muscle activity was obtained in millivolts through electromyography on biceps brachii and deltoid during 3 specific tasks, and the arm function was determined in seconds with the Action research Arm Test, a standardized tool conceived to assess upper extremity function, divided into the subscales of grasp, grip, pinch, and gross movement. Results. The electromyography results and most of the Action research Arm Test dimensions did not show any statistically significant differences in any comparison (p > 0.05) between the tape conditions. However, there could be a tendency to perform movements faster under the influence of the Kinesio tape, as implied in the dimensions of grip (p = 0.01) and total (p = 0.04) of the Action research Arm Test. Conclusions. The Kinesio tape inhibitory muscle technique and tape conditions did not evoke significant effects in muscle activity or arm function in apparently healthy muscles.
Mielomeningocele. Qualidade de vida. Bexiga urinária. ABSTRACTObjective: To evaluate the impact of conservative urological treatments of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) and continuous use of diapers in quality of life (QoL) of children with myelomeningocele and overload on their caregivers. Methodology: cross-sectional study in which data were collected to characterize the sample, pad test, voiding diary, Burden Interview questionnaire for assessing caregiver burden and Qualiveen and AUQUEI questionnaires to assess the child's QoL. Results: 24 children with caregivers were divided into two groups according to the current urological treatment, in which Group 1 (GCIC) performed CIC (n=7) and group 2 (GDiapers) used diapers (n=17). The results showed no significant difference regards to the child's QoL when compared between different urological treatment groups, however, the group of caregivers who performed the CIC had greater global burden (p=0.01). Conclusion: There is no impact of conservative urological treatments CIC and continuous use of diapers on the QoL of children with myelomeningocele, however, the caregiver who performs CIC is more overwhelmed by the demands derived from their practice when compared to caregivers under continuous use of diapers.
