RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou investigar a influência das regiões de extração (Municípios de Caracaraí e Bonfim, Sul de Roraima; Município de Alta Floresta, Norte de Mato Grosso) da madeira da espécie jatobá (Hymenaea stilbocarpa). Também, foi avaliada a influência do teor de umidade (madeira saturada e a 12%) em 15 propriedades físicas e mecânicas de interesse. Ao todo, foram preparados e ensaiados, segundo as prescrições da Norma Brasileira ABNT NR 7190 (1997), 840 corpos de prova. Os resultados da análise de variância (a 5% de significância) revelaram que a região de extração dos corpos de prova não foi significativa nas propriedades físicas e mecânicas avaliadas, pois foram obtidos valores equivalentes, independentemente da origem, aspecto altamente interessante à medida que nem sempre é possível identificar a região de onde provém a madeira tropical. Essa importância é ainda maior no caso do emprego da madeira como elemento, cujos valores de referência se encontram apontados nos anexos do referido documento normativo. Com relação ao teor de umidade, foi observada diferença significativa em oito das 15 propriedades avaliadas. A condição de 12% de teor de umidade apresentou valores médios superiores à condição saturada nas propriedades de resistência na compressão paralela (37%), resistência na tração paralela (29%) e cisalhamento (36%) na direção paralela às fibras; módulo de resistência na flexão (26%), módulo de elasticidade na compressão paralela (9%) e 200 direções paralelas (35%) e normal (28%) às fibras; e inferior na densidade aparente.

A multilayer particleboard panels, consisted of sugarcane bagasse reinforced composite as core material and hybrid composites made with Pinus taeda particles and Malva fibres as facing materials, were designed and evaluated in this work. Tukey test was used to identify the effect of the facing material, considering different combinations of Pinus taeda particles and Malva fibres, on the bulk density, thickness swelling, flexural strength, flexural stiffness and X-ray densitometry. A spray-up process was used to spread castor oil based polyurethane resin upon the dispersive phases followed by a hot compaction at 100 o C. The particleboards were classified as medium density panels in accordance to the Brazilian, American and Canadian Standards. All treatments reached the minimum strength except for elastic modulus. Tukey test demonstrated the flexural strength and modulus responses for all treatments were statistically similar. Hybrid particleboard consisted of 75% of Pinus taeda wood and 25% of Malva fibres revealed a promising sustainable material for furniture industries, combining strength, low-cost and lower thickness swelling values.

The wood is a material widely used for several purposes, especially in the construction industry. There are many factors that this is due, between them the versatility and abundant availability of the material. However, the intensive use of some species might cause shortages. The lack of information about the wood behavior when it is exposed to various conditions, as well as projects not supported by regulatory rules, may imply in its inappropriate use, compromising in the safety of the structure. In this context, it was proposed the elaboration of roofing structures projects with the following characteristics: lattice type buildings "Howe" (10° slope -cement tile); span of 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 meters (geometrical proportion, in design, surrounding a 1: 3); typology of the lateral side of the building openings -relations 1:1, 2:1, 6:1 and open (coverage of small dimensions' support) preservative treatment. Then, was determined the ratio of the wood amount (m³) and the built area (in design) to woods of C20 and C30 classes, following the requirements of NBR 7190: 1997. Front of the analysis of results was evidenced that it is possible to use unconventional woods applied in triangle framework structure in big spans, obeying a well elaborated conception of project.

As wood is an orthotropic and natural material, there are several properties required for its use in civil construction. The apparent density has been used to estimate physical and mechanical properties of wood, as it is easy to determine experimentally, unlike other determinations, which involve the use of equipment available only in large research centers. Using the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 7190 and linear and non-linear regression models, this research aimed to evaluate their accuracy in estimating the compressive strength parallel to the fibers (fc0) as well as their characteristic value (fc0,k). This study considered 72 tropical wood species from native forests that were divided into the 4 strength classes of this standard. For the set formed by all species, the linear polynomial model was the best fit, resulting in a determination coefficient of just over 70%.

Introduction: Wood is a material of biological origin widely used in construction, and its mechanical properties allow the material to form the lattice structure of roofs used in warehouses of industrial use, however, the paradigm as to the behaviour of the material makes the design decision less susceptible. Aims: This work intends to verify the feasibility and optimize the use of unconventional wood in triangular roof truss structures in regions of flat topography, with a characteristic wind speed of 30 m/s. Methods: The design methodology was fully based on the recommendations of ABNT NBR 7190 For the elements dimensioning, it was necessary to define the geometric and structural parameters that directly influence the actions and loads, as well as the behaviour of the structural elements. Results: The choice of wood in this context, it was proposed the elaboration of projects of roofing structures with the following characteristics: "Howe" latticework (inclination of 10º - steel roof tile); Spans of 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 meters (ratio width: length, in plan, environment of 1: 3); Typology of the lateral openings of the building - (relationships between main opening area: other openings) 1:1, 2:1, 6:1 and insulated coverings (coverage on a medium of reduced dimensions). Conclusion: The ratio of the volume of wood per floor area (m³.m-²) for C20 and C30 grade timber was determined, as well as the consumption of metallic pins per floor area, following the requirements of Brazilian standards, proving the technical feasibility.

Brazil has large forest vocation in construction, however, the difficulty in obtaining adequately trained professionals associated with lack of knowledge about the physical and mechanical properties, no appropriate treatment against insects and fungi, among others, confirm the reduction of durability materials and consequently the projected structure. In order to contribute effectively in reducing disease and spread the application of concepts of prevention methods to timber structures by professionals of construction in Brazil and other countries, this research aimed, through a case study carried out in a cover structure (made with Itaúba wood specie -Mezilaurusitaub meisn) located in the Midwestern region of Brazil, Mato Grosso, in the city of Sinop (11°50'5,5 "S; 55°30'4,2" W), identify pathologies present in the structure, identify possible causes and point out the most appropriate methods for repair. The cover structure has the following characteristics: Ceramic roof; truss structure of Howe type with 23° inclination; dimensions plant with 14m in width and length of 32,5m; spacing between trusses 2.5m; strips with dimensions of 2,5×5,0cm 2 rafters: 5,0×6,0cm 2 ; purlins: 5,0×15,0cm 2 ; diagonal: 5,0×10,0cm 2 ; amounts: 2 pieces with 2,5×15,0cm 2 ; upper and lower flanges: 5,0×15,0cm 2 and steel joints made with through bolts. Thus, it is expected that in the near future, this study effectively contribute to the reduction of pathologies, and spread the application of concepts and prevention methods to repair the structures, contributing positively by spreading the use of wood in the design of structures.
