BackgroundThe present study contrasts the accuracy of different reconstructed models with distinctive segmentation methods performed by various experts. Seven research groups reconstructed nine 3D models of one human femur based on an acquired CT image using their own computational methods. As a reference model for accuracy assessment, a 3D surface scan of the human femur was created using an optical measuring system. Prior to comparison, the femur was divided into four areas; “neck and greater trochanter”, “proximal metaphysis”, “diaphysis”, and “distal metaphysis”. The deviation analysis was carried out in GEOMAGIC studio v.2013 software.ResultsThe results revealed that the highest deviation errors occurred in “neck and greater trochanter” area and “proximal metaphysis” area with RMSE of 0.84 and 0.83 mm respectively.ConclusionIn conclusion, this study shows that the average deviation of reconstructed models prepared by experts with various methods, skills and software from the surface 3D scan is lower than 0.79 mm, which is not a significant discrepancy.

Adverse local tissue reactions to wear debris and corrosion products have lead to a sharp decline in the use of metal-on-metal (MOM) total hip athroplasties (THAs) clinically. Today, approximately 1 million patients are still carrying such a device. To gain a better understanding of the effect of wear and corrosion products on cells within the joint environment, it is important to generate conditions in vitro that resemble the in vivo system as closely as possible. In this paper, we present a novel tribocorrosion bioreactor that enables the simultaneous conduction of tribocorrosion and cell-culture experiments. In this setup, macrophage cell cultures are located in direct proximity to a tribological interface mimicking the sliding conditions of THA and are exposed to wear and corrosion products as they are generated. These products may include meta-stable species and metallo-organic complexes that have not been considered in earlier studies. The combination of standard tribological, electrochemical, and biological techniques is associated with several challenges that are described here in detail.

Die vorliegende Arbeit wendet sich an Ingenieure und Mediziner im Bereich der orthopädischen Medizintechnik mit speziellem Fokus auf zwei Hüfterkrankungen, dem Femoroacetabulären Impingement und der Femurkopfnekrose. Zur Untersuchung dieser Krankheitsbilder wurden patientenindividuelle 3D Modelle der Hüfte aus MRT-Datensätzen erstellt. Diese Modelle wurden anschließend in FEM- und MKS Simulationen weiter untersucht, um einen besseren Einblick in die Biomechanik der Hüfte zu erhalten und neue Therapien für diese Erkrankungen zu entwickeln. ...
