Design of a Tribocorrosion Bioreactor for the Analysis of Immune Cell Response to in Situ Generated Wear Products

Abstract: Adverse local tissue reactions to wear debris and corrosion products have lead to a sharp decline in the use of metal-on-metal (MOM) total hip athroplasties (THAs) clinically. Today, approximately 1 million patients are still carrying such a device. To gain a better understanding of the effect of wear and corrosion products on cells within the joint environment, it is important to generate conditions in vitro that resemble the in vivo system as closely as possible. In this paper, we present a novel tribocorros… Show more

“…As reported previously by Catelas et al (Catelas et al 2004) and Pourzal et al (Pourzal et al 2014), the wear particles generated from hip simulator using the serum as lubricant will have a characteristic particle size below 100 nm. Most of the particles generated in a protein-rich medium will have a tendency to form protein corona around the particles, which may stabilize the particles in solution.…”

“…Also, it is important to note that all the electrochemical experiments were conducted under atmospheric conditions, not in CO 2 ‐enriched atmosphere. Therefore, a slight variation in pH can occur as reported in a previous study, but this pH change is inconsequential for the corrosion behavior of CoCrMo, and all tests were conducted under the same conditions.…”
