The complex multi-gear, multi-species tropical fisheries in developing countries are poorly understood and characterising the landings from these fisheries is often impossible using conventional approaches. A rapid assessment method for characterising landings at fish markets, using an index of abundance and estimated weight within taxonomic groups, is described. This approach was developed for contexts where there are no detailed data collection protocols, and where consistent data collection across a wide range of fisheries types and geographic areas is required, regardless of the size of the site and scale of the landings. This methodology, which was demonstrated at seven fish landing sites/fish markets in southern Indonesia between July 2008 and January 2011, provides a rapid assessment of the abundance and diversity in the wild catch over a wide variety of taxonomic groups. The approach has wider application for species-rich fisheries in developing countries where there is an urgent need for better data collection protocols, monitoring future changes in market demographics, and evaluating health of fisheries.
ABSTRAKPerairan Kwandang merupakan salah satu basis utama perikanan pelagis kecil di perairan laut Sulawesi. Salah satu jenis yang banyak dimanfaatkan adalah ikan bentong (Selar crumenophthalmus). Studies on artisanal shark fisheries in Tanjungluar - East Lombok were conducted during the year 2001-2011 (except in 2003 and 2007). A sampling method called “rapid market survey” method was employed to collect catch data from surface and bottom longlines fishing, rapidly. Biological data and fisheries data were collected during survey. Catch data for shark were also obtained from daily records filled by TPI officers in Tanjungluar between 2009 and 2010. The results showed that shark<br />longline fishing was conducted every month. The trend of shark catches relates to the number of fishing vessels, fishing ground, and weather conditions at sea. The period between July and September is a transitional season from East to West seasons. During this season, the wind strength is weakened and a good fishing season for the fishers. The lowest catch occurs in January (1.06 tonnes) and the highest catch in September with the total catch of 24.6 tonnes. Sharks caught by surface longline were dominated by Silky shark, Carcharhinus falciformis (40-90%) with the size range of 100-125 cm. The catch of bottom longline was mostly consisting of fish in mature condition that dominated by Grey reef shark (<em>Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos</em>), Common black tip shark (<em>C. limbatus</em>), Spot tail shark (<em>C. sorrah</em>), and Scalloped hammerhead shark (<em>Sphyrna lewini</em>), with the size range of 125-200 cm, 170- 250 cm, 100-150 cm, and 170-300 cm, respectively. Surface longline fishing occurs in the offshore waters in depth more than 200 m to 3000 m, whereas bottom longline fishing is operated at a depth of 50-100 m around islands.
Tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon, Fabricus, 1789) was one of economic commodity of shrimp in Indonesia and had been exploited and developed for long time so that necessary management measure based on biology study. The aim of the research was to study of biology aspects of tiger shrimp such as length-weigth relationship, sex ratio, maturity stage and length of first capture (Lc) and length of first maturity (Lm). The research were carried out from January to November 2016 using survey method and the enumeration programme. The result of 2.208 sample of tiger shrimp analyzed showed that size of tiger shrimp between 21.9-63 mmCL with the growth follows a isometric trend. Spawning season occurs throughout the year with peak season in March-April and September. Sex ratio was in an unbalanced condition dominated by females. The length of first capture (Lc) was 40.69 mmCL and length of first maturity (Lm) was 33.58 mmCL.
Caroun croaker (Johnius carouna) is one of demersal fishes which are commonly caught in the south of Java waters. This fish captured by trammel net, gillnet, danish seine and mini trawl. This study aims to determine length and weight relationship, growth parameter, length frequency distribution and condition factors of croaker fish caught in the south of Java waters. This study was conducted from January-December 2015 at the Cilacap Ocean Fisheries Port, Central Java. Data collected was total length (TL in mm) and weight (W in g) of caroun croacker fish. A total of 2141 of Caroun croaker was caught by mini trawl during the sampling periods. The result showed that the size of croaker fish caught by mini trawl ranged between 85-225 mm with an average was 143.7 mm. Length and weight relationship expressed by equation of W = 0.0062 TL3.2889 ( R2 = 0.9443). The growth pattern of croaker fish was allometric positive. The Von Bertalanffy growth equation of caroun croacker fish in south of Java waters was Lt =155 (1 - e -0.9(t+0.2127)) with the asymptotic length (L∞) =155 mm, growth coefficient (K) = 0.9 per year and the theoretical age croaker fish that was equal to (t0) = - 0,2127.
