Numerical modeling and simulation of clay brick masonry infilled in a reinforced concrete frame (RC frame) subjected to blast loading has been presented in this paper. The pressure loading generated in blast shock has been applied on the masonry and the reinforced concrete frame and time history analysis has been made using ABAQUS finite element software package. The slip and separation at the joints of RC frame and masonry occurring during blast loading due to large difference in their stiffness has been modeled using contact algorithm. The study of the infilled brick masonry has been carried out with elasto-plastic strain hardening model using Mohr-Coulomb yield and failure criterion and contact algorithm for modeling contact behaviour at the interface of masonry wall and RC frame. The non-linearity in RC beam/column has been modelled using concrete damaged plasticity model. The parameters for non-linear finite element modeling of masonry have been experimentally determined. In order to gain confidence in the analysis, the proposed constitutive models have been validated with available experimental results on infilled masonry walls. The parametric study has been made for surface blast of 100 kg TNT at a detonation distance 20, 30 and 40 m for 340 mm and 235 mm thick masonry walls with three grades of mortar infilled in a RC frame. The effect of variation of contact friction between mortar and RC elements on the behaviour of masonry walls has also been studied.
Aims:This cross-sectional study was conducted to correlate the clinical picture, causative factors of leukoplakia with its histopathology in the patients of Garhwal hill region.Materials and Methods:The study was carried out on indoor and outdoor patients of Department of Otorhinolaryngology, HNB Base Hospital, Srinagar, Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Patients were interviewed by a predesigned questionnaire and clinically examined. Finally, histopathological examination was done by using proper technique.Statistical Analysis:The data were analyzed by using SPSS version 15.Results:The sample consisted of 90 patients were evaluated. Minimum age of presentation was 18 years while the maximum was 65 years. The majority of patients were in age group of 31-40 years, with male predominance. Majority of cases were of minimum dysplasia and minimum of carcinoma in situ (CIS). Buccal mucosa is the most common site for leukoplakia, while hard palate is the least common site. One case of CIS was reported in buccal mucosa, while two cases of CIS were found in specialized mucosa. Smoking and pan masala (in both types with or without tobacco mixed) had a direct relation with the histological type of leukoplakia, as the amount and duration of consumption increased, the severity of dysplasia increased. Conclusions:Majority of cases were males in age group of 31-40 years. Probably, it was due to the addiction to smoking and pan masala started early in this region. Severity of dysplasia was related to the amount and duration of exposure to smoking and pan masala. Buccal mucosa was commonly involved because of general human tendency of keeping pan masala in buccal region for a long duration.
Crop residue management is a massive problem in the agriculture sector. Agricultural waste in the form of stubble which is usually burnt in the farm fields, causes severe air pollution and poses a threat to the environment. The present study investigates the addition of agro-waste (rice straw) in gypsum hollow-core blocks for partition walls. Various compositions of agro-waste-based gypsum samples have been studied for compressive strength, thermal, sound absorption, sound transmission loss, and fire-resistant properties. The addition of rice straw in gypsum reduces the density and compressive strength of the test sample, thus making it lightweight for non-load bearing wall application. The thermal conductivity of the rice straw added gypsum samples show a decrease in thermal conductivity from 0.2 to 0.11 W/m K. Acoustic properties viz., noise reduction coefficient (NRC) increases from 25 to 45% with increase in rice straw addition and a decreasing trend in sound transmission class (STC) from 37 to 28 dB. The fire-resistant properties viz., surface spread of flame, and fire propagation index test have shown good fire-resistant properties. The agro-waste-based hollow gypsum blocks may be used as a promising material for drywall partitions owing to its thermal insulation, low density, good acoustic and fire-resistant properties.
