Letters to have increased by approximately 70 per cent during this period (Anon 2004). This increase in population density, combined with the social habits of badgers, could facilitate the spread of sarcoptic mange. We would like to raise awareness among veterinary practitioners and wildlife workers of sarcoptic mange as a differential diagnosis for skin disease in badgers. Although the public health risk is considered small, as with sarcoptic mange in other species, there is a potential zoonotic risk from close contact with infected animals, and therefore the use of gloves and protective clothing is recommended when handling such animals.
