Studies made on 33 species of fresh water teleosts showed a wide range of variations in their total red and white blood cell counts. General range being 0.84 × 106 — 4.68 × 106/cmm and 6450.0–72500.0/cmm, respectively for total red and white blood cells. The large variation was not only interspecific but also intraspecific. The two values show to be affected by size of the fish, their general habits, feeding habits and metabolic needs. Active fish usually had higher red cell counts and low white cell counts.

Untersuchungen über die Zahl an weißen und roten Blutkörperchen bei Süßwasserfischen
Die Untersuchungen wurden an 33 verschiedenen Arten von Süßwasser‐Teleosten durchgeführt. Die Anzahl an roten Blutkörperchen schwankt zwischen 0,84 × 106 und 4,68 × 106/ccm, die der weißen Blutkörperchen zwischen 64 500 und 725 000/ccm. Unterschiede traten nicht nur zwischen den species, sondern auch innerhalb der species auf. Es besteht eine Abhängigkeit dieser Werte von der Größe des Fisches, seines Gesundheitszustandes, seines Futterzustandes und seiner Aktivität. Aktive Fische weisen mehr rote als weiße Blutkörperchen auf.
Serum cholesterol levels of six species of fresh water fishes were lowered due to trypanosome infection. The percentage of infection in the different species of hosts ranged from 3.27% in Clarias batrachus to 16.66% in Wallago attu. Loss in serum cholesterol level was highest (42.39%) in the spiny eel Mastocembelus armotus and lowest in the carp Cirrhina mrigala (4.56%). Thus hypocholesterolemia was evidently caused in the fishes by trypanosomes.
Ascorbic acid levels of seven species of digenetic trematodes, living under different environmental conditions in fish and mammals were determined colorimetrically. Ascorbic acid levels ranged from 0.312 mg/100 g fresh weight in Gastrothylax crumenifer to 5.070 mg/100 g fresh weight in Fasciola indica. Low levels of ascorbic acid were detected in the rumen parasites and in Isoparorchis hypselobagri. In contrast the liver parasites were found to have relatively high ascorbic acid levels.
