The multisystem effects of SARS-CoV-2 encompass the thyroid gland as well. Emerging evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 can act as a trigger for subacute thyroiditis (SAT). We conducted a systematic literature search using PubMed/Medline and Google Scholar to identify cases of subacute thyroiditis associated with COVID-19 and evaluated patient-level demographics, major clinical features, laboratory findings and outcomes. In the 21 cases that we reviewed, the mean age of patients was 40.0 ± 11.3 years with a greater female preponderance (71.4%). Mean number days between the start of COVID-19 illness and the appearance of SAT symptoms were 25.2 ± 10.1. Five patients were confirmed to have ongoing COVID-19, whereas the infection had resolved in 16 patients before onset of SAT symptoms. Fever and neck pain were the most common presenting complaints (81%). Ninety-four percent of patients reported some type of hyperthyroid symptoms, while the labs in all 21 patients (100%) confirmed this with low TSH and high T3 or T4. Inflammatory markers were elevated in all cases that reported ESR and CRP. All 21 cases (100%) had ultrasound findings suggestive of SAT. Steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs were the mainstay of treatment, and all patients reported resolution of symptoms; however, 5 patients (23.8%) were reported to have a hypothyroid illness on follow-up. Large-scale studies are needed for a better understanding of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms, but current evidence suggests that clinicians need to recognize the possibility of SAT both in ongoing and resolved COVID-19 infection to optimize patient care.

We are living in an era of technology where smart phones and hence social media has entered into many aspects of our life. Many professions are using social media to improve communication between colleagues. Social media tools are gaining attention in medical education as well.Objective: To explore the potential of WhatsApp as an instructional strategy for 4 th Year MBBS students in Ophthalmology. Methods:We made two groups of students on WhatsApp one for males and one for females. Topic of lecture, relevant images of taught topic and MCQs and SEQs were shared in both groups and students were encouraged to ask questions if they had any. After ten lectures the students were asked to give their feedback on our activity of WhatsApp group on an anonymous questionnaire.Results: Two hundred and thirty four students, 145 (62.0%) female and 86 (36.8%) males students filled in the anonymous questionnaire. One hundred and eighty nine students (88.77%) were using social media to learn medicine while 45 students (19.23%) were not. Sixty seven students (29.39%) were using both WhatsApp and Facebook, 65 students (28.51%) were using Facebook, 57 students (25%) were using WhatsApp. Sixty percent of students were using social media once or more than twice a day. Eighty eight (63.8%) female students and 66 (77.7%) male students ranked this activity as high or above. To the open ended question we got appreciative comments and some suggestion. Conclusion:WhatsApp is an effective social media tool to motivate, augmentand perhaps improve the learning of undergraduates in addition to traditional teaching.

Objective: This study aims to determine level of stress, resilience and moral distress among health care providers during covid-19 pandemic. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study performed using an online questionnaire. Data was collected from Health Care Providers, working in various tertiary care hospitals of Lahore, using an online questionnaire. Perceived stress scale (PSS), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 10) and Moral Distress Thermometer were used to determine level of stress, resilience and moral stress respectively among the HCPs. Scores on the PSS can range from 0 to 40 with scores of 0-13, 14-26 and 27-40 being considered as low, moderate and high stress respectively. The Moral Distress Thermometer has scores ranging from 0-10 with value of ≥4 considered high. Data was analyzed using SPSS version.23.Descriptive variables were reported as means and frequencies. Intergroup analysis was done using Chi square test with p<0.05 taken as significant. Results: A total of 278 (n=278) HCPs participated in study. According to the PSS (Perceived Stress Scale) scores, 5.03% (14) reported low, 86.69% (241) moderate and 8.27% (23) high stress levels. The mean stress score is 21.56+/-4.32. Providing patient care (mean = 2.28+/-1.15 SD) and transmitting infection to others (mean = 3.02+/-1.10 SD) were deemed major causes of stress. The mean CD-RISC score was 23.14+/-7.81 SD. Only 10.8% (30) had a score of ≥ 32. The mean Moral Distress score was 4.2+/-2.98 SD, with 53.2% (149) participants reporting high Moral distress (score ≥4). Conclusion: The high level of stress among HCPs during COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need of urgent measures to overcome this psychological issue which if left un-addressed can affect performance of HCPs. This is a brief review covering the currently available literature on ocular manifestations of COVID-19, andprevention strategies for ophthalmologists. A literature search was carried out of Pubmed, Google Scholar andWHO database of publications on COVID. Keywords used in the search were eye, ocular manifestations,ophthalmology, COVID-19, nCoV-2019, and coronavirus disease. All available articles were reviewed and thosepertinent to the study topic were included. Considering the dearth of information available, ophthalmology journals were also searched separately for relevant articles. Major ocular manifestation of COVID reported in literature is red eye, which usually presents before the onset of respiratory symptoms. Since the eye can be a possible transmission route for SARS-CoV-2, infection control measures should be undertaken by ophthalmologists, including use of personal protection equipment and eye/face covering. A framework for structuring ophthalmological services during the COVID pandemic is also presented in this review.

Purpose:  Orbital trauma is associated with orbital blowout fractures, with associated globe injuries and loss of vision. Orbital reconstruction can be done with various implant materials. The aim of this study is to identify the safety and postoperative outcomes of using X-ray films as orbital implants during orbital reconstruction surgery. Study Design:  An interventional case series. Place and Duration of Study:  Ophthalmology departments of Lahore General Hospital and Mayo Hospital, Lahore from June 2001 to May 2017. Methods:  Retrospective data of all the patients who came for orbital reconstruction surgeries from June 2001 to May 2017 was retrieved. All patients had undergone CT scan prior to surgery. Orbital reconstruction was done by a single surgeon, by bridging bony defect with sterilized X-ray film. All patients received post-operative antibiotics for 1 week. Results:  Twenty three male patients were included in the series, with a mean age of 28 ± 2.47 years. Assault and sports injuries with a ball were the commonest form of trauma. Diplopia was the major presenting complaint in 91% of the patients. All patients underwent surgical reconstruction of the orbital floor of orbit with sterilized X-ray film using a lateral canthotomy approach. Only mild postoperative diplopia was recorded in 7 of the cases, with uneventful recovery in the majority. Conclusion:  Sterilized X-ray film is a safe, cost effective, and durable material for reconstruction after orbital blowout fracture, especially in developing countries.
