Maps of rainy day numbers and the coefficient of variation (CV) for rainfall and rainy days are presented. Autocorrelation function was obtained for the annual rainfall in northeastern Brazil. Results showed that the semiarid regions have a high coefficient of variation for both rainfall and rainy days than those located in northeastern coast and ´agreste´ of Brazil. The highest values of coefficient of variation are associated to the lowest values of rainfall and rainy days. The rainfall change in northeastern Brazil is smaller in rainy regions than in dry regions. The high changes in rainfall and rainy days are limiting features to the rainfed agriculture in semiarid environments. The correlograms of rainfall indicated significant trend for the limits of 95% confidence levels on some stations.
The systems were: asbestos tiles and clay tiles without forced ventilation, asbestos tiles and clay tiles with forced ventilation, asbestos tiles and clay tiles with artificial ventilation and fogging and asbestos tiles with forced ventilation, fogging and sprinkling on the roof. The evaluation was based on the results of air temperature (AT), relative humidity (RH), black globe temperature (BGT) and the radiation thermal charge (RTC), measured at different diurnal times during the summer. Influence of the roof types on the thermal comfort was observed. In all systems the comfort index evaluated varied during the day and that AT, BGT and RTC showed values higher than those considered optimum. The RH values were within the thermal comfort zone.
We survey research on self-driving cars published in the literature focusing on autonomous cars developed since the DARPA challenges, which are equipped with an autonomy system that can be categorized as SAE level 3 or higher. The architecture of the autonomy system of self-driving cars is typically organized into the perception system and the decision-making system. The perception system is generally divided into many subsystems responsible for tasks such as self-driving-car localization, static obstacles mapping, moving obstacles detection and tracking, road mapping, traffic signalization detection and recognition, among others. The decision-making system is commonly partitioned as well into many subsystems responsible for tasks such as route planning, path planning, behavior selection, motion planning, and control. In this survey, we present the typical architecture of the autonomy system of self-driving cars. We also review research on relevant methods for perception and decision making. Furthermore, we present a detailed description of the architecture of the autonomy system of the self-driving car developed at the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES), named Intelligent Autonomous Robotics Automobile (IARA). Finally, we list prominent self-driving car research platforms developed by academia and technology companies, and reported in the media.
Classification of Daily Rain and Impacts Resulting from Disasters Linked to Rainfall in the City of Recife-PE A B S T R A C TData of daily rainfall were used for determining and classifying the threshold values of rainfall as well as for evaluating the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of the disasters associated to the rains in the city of Recife-PE. Based on the technique of quantiles, the daily precipitation (R, in mm) was divided into the following classes: Dry Day: R < 2.2: Rain very weak (Rvw): 2.2 ≤ R < 4.2; Showers (Rw): 4.2 ≤ R < 8.4; Moderate rain (MR): 8.4 ≤ R < 18.6; Heavy Rain (HR): 18.6 ≤ R < 55.3; Very Strong Rain (VSR): R ≥ 55.3. The results showed that when there are records of precipitation within the classes of Strong and Very Strong Rain, there are always many points of landslides and flooding. Moderate intensity rains can also trigger landslides, particularly points of flooding. There was no occurrence of damage associated with Shower, however, when there are records of precipitation on consecutive days prior to an event Showers with accumulated more than 30 mm, landslides may occur. Consecutive days of rain prior to an event of Very Strong, Strong and Moderate Rain further contribute to the occurrence of disasters. Despite the extreme events of Heavy Rainfall are observed mainly between March and July, these events may occur in other seasons. It was found that the...
This study attempted to assess a bioclimate index and the occurrence of an urban heat island in the city of Campina Grande, northeastern Brazil, using data taken from mobile measurements and Automatic Weather Stations (AWS). The climate data were obtained during two representative months, one for the dry season (November 2005) and one for the rainy season (June 2006) at seven points in an urban area. Ten-minute air temperatures recorded by an AWS installed in urban areas were compared to those from a similar station located in a suburban area to assess the urban heat island (UHI). The data were collected using a 23X data logger (Campbell Scientific, Inc.) programmed for collecting data every second. The thermal discomfort level was analyzed by Thom's discomfort index (DI), and an analysis of variance was applied for assessing if there was any statistically significant difference at the 1% and 5% significance level of thermal comfort among points. Mann-Kendall statistical test was used for identifying possibly significant trends in a time series for air temperature, relative humidity, and class A pan evaporation for the city of Campina Grande. The present study found UHI intensities of 1.48 degrees C and -0.7 degrees C for the months taken as representative of the dry and rainy seasons, respectively. Summer in the city has partially comfortable conditions while the winter is fully comfortable. There are significant changes in DI hourly values between seasons. Only during the rainy season did all points of the city have a comfortable condition until 8:19 h, at which time they become partially comfortable for the rest of the day. Results indicated that there was a 1.5 degrees C increase in air temperature and a 7.2% reduction in relative humidity throughout the analyzed time series. The DI also showed a statistically significant increasing trend (Mann-Kendall test, p < 0.01) for the dry and rainy seasons and annual period of approximately 1 degree C in the last 41 years in the city of Campina Grande.
