Evaluating the urban climate of a typically tropical city of northeastern Brazil

Abstract: This study attempted to assess a bioclimate index and the occurrence of an urban heat island in the city of Campina Grande, northeastern Brazil, using data taken from mobile measurements and Automatic Weather Stations (AWS). The climate data were obtained during two representative months, one for the dry season (November 2005) and one for the rainy season (June 2006) at seven points in an urban area. Ten-minute air temperatures recorded by an AWS installed in urban areas were compared to those from a similar s… Show more

“…Although ΔTurb-sub were higher in winter, they were also present both day and night in the summer. Higher urban air temperatures in the summer occurring with higher absolute air humidity inevitably aggravate thermal discomfort (Silva et al, 2010).…”

“…Most cities investigated in tropical regions showed higher IUHI in the dry season (Jonsson, 2004). In Campina Grande, Silva et al (2010) found that high ΔTurb-sub was observed during the representative month of the dry season. They are most frequent during the dry season when it is likely that low rural thermal admittance of dry soils combines with relatively low air moisture to cause rapid cooling rates at the rural site throughout the night.…”

“…This community belongs to the 'Brejo Paraibano' Microregion and its climate is humid with rains distributed from January to September (Silva et al, 2010). The experimental design of the field study with 'batata-de-purga' was a randomized block, in a factorial scheme with 30 plots, containing 3 plants each and the factors were irrigation depths and shading conditions.…”

“…6(a)-6(b), it can observed that summer (June, July, and August -JJA) and autumn (September, October, and November -SON) produce the highest wind speed values for the yearly groups. The nonparametric Mann-Kendall test has been suggested by the WMO to assess the data trends in time series of environmental variables [37]. This test consists of comparing each value of the time series with the other values remaining in the sequential order.…”
