AbstractThis study evaluates social, individual and linguistic factors in the performance of a single-word reading aloud task. A group of 1 st to 4 th grade school children from Belo Horizonte-MG (N = 333) read aloud 323 single words presented in a computer screen. Measures of reaction time (RT) and error scores were collected. The Generalized Estimating Equations method exhibited the grapheme-phoneme and phoneme-grapheme regularity effect in reading and also showed an impact on the number of categories of regularity in this effect. No social factor was important to explain the results, but their mothers' education was correlated to the error scores (in opposite direction). There was no gender effect. Other factors rather than the traditional ones were also relevant, such as the age of reading acquisition and the verbal comprehension. The work brings important theoretical issues to cognitive reading assessment in Brazil.
AbstractThe present work attempts to review the main conclusions of the studies carried out in the area of word recognition with Portuguese speaking children and to raise theoretical and methodological issues that still require the attention of researchers. The emphasis of this work is centered on the word reading aloud task performed by children in the process of reading acquisition. Three major conclusions were derived from the review: (a) generally, the collection of studies in Portuguese language confirm the assumptions of the dual-route model of word recognition; (b) Portuguese speaking children seem to prefer to use the phonological strategy in the beginning of the reading process, which is then gradually substituted by the preferential use of the lexical strategy; and (c) methodological issues have interfered in the results found by different researchers, and these are related to the manner of application of the reading task, the type of statistical analysis carried out and to the direction (from the reading or spelling standpoint) and number of categories considered in the classification of regularity of the words.
Palavras-chave: nomeação rápida, validade, normas, decodificação Rapid Automatized Naming of Pictures for Children: Validity Studies and Intra-Group Norms AbstractRapid naming tasks evaluate lexical access. We report a validity study and norms for the Rapid Automatized Naming Task, composed of six randomized pictures distributed on two cards (Part A and B). A representative sample of children from 2nd to 5th grades of elementary schools of Sao Paulo City (N = 728) was tested in the task and word recognition. Response time and accuracy were collected. As expected, the following evidences were observed: (1) grade effect for response time and accuracy, (2) response time and error rates were higher for Part B, (3) correlation between Part A and B was significant (p < 0.05), and (4) response time and accuracy predicted decoding ability. The results support different sources of validity evidence for the task.
The present study investigated the psychometric properties of the Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices (CPM) test in a sample of preschoolers from Brazil ( n = 582; age: mean = 57 months, SD = 7 months; 46% female). We investigated the plausibility of unidimensionality of the items (confirmatory factor analysis) and differential item functioning (DIF) for sex and age (multiple indicators multiple causes method). We tested four unidimensional models and the one with the best-fit index was a reduced form of the Raven's CPM. The DIF analysis was carried out with the reduced form of the test. A few items presented DIF (two for sex and one for age), confirming that the Raven's CPM items are mostly measurement invariant. There was no effect of sex on the general factor, but increasing age was associated with higher values of the g factor. Future research should indicate if the reduced form is suitable for evaluating the general ability of preschoolers.
