Field trials were conducted to determine the effect of time and rate of single and split applications of nitrogen on various malting parameters of barley. The effect of a single low nitrogen application of 50 kg N ha-1 at sowing was compared with high nitrogen applications of 150 kg N ha-1 given as split applications at different growth stages. The barley was malted in an automatic micro-malting system and the malt analysed for various quality parameters. A number of the high nitrogen applications significantly increased total nitrogen, soluble nitrogen, free amino-nitrogen, and alpha-and beta-amylase activity, whereas the fine-grind extract was not significantly affected. The growth stage at which supplementary nitrogen was applied significantly affected all malting parameters except the total nitrogen content. Highest values in general were found when split applications of nitrogen were done at five different growth stages until ear emergence.Veldproewe is uitgevoer om die invloed van tyd en hoeveelheid van stikstofioedienings op verskillende mouteienskappe van gars na te gaan. Effect of different potassium fertilizers on the tuber yield and dry matter content of Solanum tuberosum L. Compared with KCI and K 2 S0 4 , KN0 3 produced the highest tuber yield under controlled nutrition and environmental conditions. Although KCI produced a higher tuber yield than K 2 S0 4 , the difference was only . significant in 1985 when all cultivars were compared (cv. BP1, Vanderplank, Up-to-date, Pimpernel). KN0 3 produced significantly larger and a greater number of tubers than KCI and K 2 S0 4 . Although not statistically significant, KCI produced fewer and larger tubers than K 2 S0 4 . There was an interaction between potassium carriers and cultivars which showed that not all cultivars reacted similarly to individual potassium carriers. The effect of K 2 S0 4 , although not significant, was to consistently produce the most tuber dry matter content (OMC) compared with KC!. A strong positive correlation was obtained between OMC and specific gravity (SG) of tubers and a weak negative correlation was fO!Jnd between tuber weight and OMC .. .
