El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar las relaciones entre diversas variables emocionales (intensidad emocional, afecto negativo, timidez, regulación emocional, comprensión de la ambivalencia emocional, tolerancia/irritabilidad, confianza/ansiedad y tendencias depresivas) y el funcionamiento social de los escolares. Para evaluar el funcionamiento social se utilizaron las siguientes medidas: estrategias de interacción, conducta agresiva, conducta social positiva, integración en el grupo, estatus sociométrico y percepción de soledad. La muestra se compuso de 257 niños y niñas de edades comprendidas entre los 7 y los 9 años. Considerando las medidas de funcionamiento social se realizó un análisis de Cluster que identificó tres grupos: competentes, ignorados, y problemáticos. El análisis de varianza mostró diferencias significativas entre los tres grupos en la mayoría de las variables emocionales. Los niños competentes mostraron, en relación con los problemáticos, puntuaciones significativamente más altas en regulación emocional, tolerancia y confianza, y más bajas en intensidad emocional, emocionalidad negativa y tendencias depresivas. Los niños ignorados mostraban puntuaciones significativamente más altas que el resto en timidez y moderadas en el resto de las variables emocionales.
