Na literatura portuguesa contemporânea vimos assistindo, desde há quase duas décadas, a uma singular inversão das relações entre as entidades que um clássico moderno designou através duma conjunção famosa: O Antigo Regime e o Revolução. Como se sabe, e mais latamente, a modernidade começou com essa grande revolução, para muitos concluída, que prometendo tudo o que as revoluções desde então se habituaram a flll'ometer, nos ofereceu, entre direitos, regalias e deveres, o imperativo categórico do progresso, o qual em breve se transmitiria também ao domínio das artes, em si tão dado a regressões mais ou menos renascentistas. Contudo, a revolução nas artes, coincidindo epocalmente com o que no nosso século aconteceu num já muito longínquo Outubro, quis-se radicalmente progressista, despedindo-se sem mágoa, nem irreprimíveis olhares para trás, da Eurídice da Trad ição sobre a qual se edificara o Antigo Regime. Como fomos vendo ao longo do sécu lo, a ênfase libertária do Moderno, com o seu ataque a todos os fundamentos, criou tantas possibilidades novas como as que perdeu. E por fim, a sua lógica anti-historicista conheceria uma (re)solução aporética na produção da tão decantada tradição do novo, a qual, porque gerada por um princípio operativo negativo, se entregaria a um drástico estreitamento, não renovável, das suas possibilidades expressivas, a culminar eventualmente numa palavra derradeira, anunciadora de um silêncio
