The influence of feeding high milk on performance, health, and absorption capability of the small intestine was studied in Holstein calves (eight males and eight females). Animals were kept in outdoor hutches bedded with straw. Treatments consisted of two quantities of milk: 1) 4.1 kg of whole milk from 3 to 48 days of age when calves were weaned and 2) gradually increasing milk from 4.1 to 7.0 kg during the first 2 wk of treatment and feeding 7.6 kg per day thereafter until day 42. Milk was reduced gradually during the 7th wk. Intake of milk averaged 4.1 and 6.7 kg per animal per day. Commercial starter, alfalfa hay, and water were offered ad libitum to all calves. Higher milk resulted in larger weight gains (615 versus 538 g/day) and less starter intake. Total dry matter intake, feed efficiency, and scour scores were not different between treatments, but rectal temperatures were greater on high milk. Female calves fed high milk showed less xylose absorption and more days medicated than females fed less milk.
S U M M A R YA previously described model of digestion in cattle fed sugarcane diets was applied to predict nutrient supply to the host animal from dietary intake, to indicate pre-experimentally the suitability of various supplements to enhance the milk production of dairy cattle in the tropics fed sugarcane-based diets. Potential milk production was calculated according to simulated energy and lipogenic, glucogenic and aminogenic nutrient availability. The addition of small amounts of urea (10 g/kg sugarcane fresh weight) improved microbial efficiency and degradation of substrates in the rumen, but further increases could only be achieved by supplements containing rumen degradable protein. The simulated level of absorbed amino acids was low in comparison with the level of absorbed energy and glucogenic substrates. This low amino acid availability was the factor most limiting milk production on sugarcane diets and supplements which increase the amino acid availability in the gastrointestinal tract are recommended. At increasing supplementation or intake levels, and once amino acid requirements were met, an increased absorption of energy and long chain fatty acids could enhance milk production. These suggestions should be evaluated experimentally in order to improve the model and ultimately, to result in an improved system to evaluate feeds, based on the supply and utilization of individual substrates.
A dynamic model of digestion and absorption of nutrients in cattle fed sugarcane-based diets is described. There are 11 rumen state variables, and four zero pools representing absorbed nutrients. The rumen state variables represent nitrogen, carbohydrate, long chain fatty acid, microbial and volatile fatty acid pools. The zero pools relate to absorbed amino acids, glucose, long chain fatty acids, and volatile fatty acids. The flux equations are described by mass-action and Michaelis-Menten forms. Wherever possible, data derived from trials with cattle fed sugarcane-based diets were used to parameterize the model. Sensitivity analyses revealed that stability and behaviour of the model was generally satisfactory. The model was most sensitive to changes in fractional passage and substrate hydrolysis rates and to the microbial maintenance requirement. Within the limited information available for comparison, the simulations agreed with observations of fibre flows and ammonia and volatile fatty acid concentrations in rumen fluid. Duodenal non-ammonia nitrogen flow was consistently underpredicted and reasons for this underprediction are suggested.
Palavras-chave: bovinos de leite, eficiência bioeconômica, simulação Bioeconomic evaluation of feeding strategies in milk production systems. Production per animal and per areaABSTRACT -This work was carried out to apply a simulation model for the bioeconomic evaluation of feeding strategies for dairy herds and evaluate the physical productivity and the bioeconomic efficiency of feeding systems for dairy cows using feeding forage based strategies for cows with five levels of milk yield. An computational platform developed with the programs CNCPS v5.0 and electronic spreadsheets of Microsoft Excell ® was used, in way to simulate the production and demands of nutrients of a complete lactation for cows of different milk yield levels. Economic analyses in seven strategies of feeding were carried out. The income over feed costs (RMCA) showed interaction among the feeding strategy with the milk yield levels. The strategies based on corn silage during the dry season and pastures during rain season resulted in higher RMCA for all milk yield levels, although the other feeding strategies present closed results, depending on the milk yield level. In the evaluated strategies, as higher was the milk yield per cow, greater was the productivity (PROD/ha) and the RMCA per area (RMCA/ha). As higher was the carrying capacity of f...
The EBE was defined similarly to the biological efficiency, considering the amount of feeds utilized and the milk production obtained, multiplied by the respective economical values. Also, with the purpose of evaluating EBE of the cows of each production level, were evaluated the medium physical product (PFme) and the marginal physical product (PFma) for each production level and feeding strategy. In the evaluation of PFma, regression equations of milk yield per cow in function of concentrate level utilization and total feeding costs were estimate. Palavras-chave: absorção aparente, bezerros, cálcio, consumo, fósforo, magnésio, potássio, sódio, volumoso Intake and Apparent Absorption of Calcium, Phosphorus, Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium of Calves Fed Diets with Different Levels of RoughageABSTRACT -The effects of different levels of roughage on intake and apparent absorption of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), sodium (Na), potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) were studied. Forty Holstein x Zebu calves, with initial average live weight of 60 kg, allotted to a completely randomized design, were fed concentrate and chopped coastcross (Cynodon dactylon) grass hay ad libitum in the following levels: 10; 25; 40; 55 e 90%, on a DM basis. The coefficients of apparent absorption were obtained by one experiment with two experimental periods of digestibility, accomplished at 120 and 180 days of age of the animals. The fecal dry matter excretion was estimated with chromium oxide. The intakes of Ca, P, Mg, Na and K in (g/day) showed a quadratic effect and the respective maximum intakes were estimated for 47.0, 30.0, 45.3, 41.0 and 51.8 % of roughage in the diet. The apparent absorption coefficients of Ca, P and K were affected by the level of roughage, showing a quadratic effect, with the respective maximum absorptions of 58.7, 56.1 and 78.3% for the levels of 20.3, 23.1 and 45.2 % of hay in the diet.
Palavras-chave: abrigos móveis, consumo, frequência respiratória, ganho de peso, temperatura retal Performance, physiological and behavioral measurements of dairy calves in different housing systems: rainy season ABSTRACT -The objective of this trial was to evaluate performance, thermal comfort and behavior of crossbred Holstein x Zebu dairy calves kept in different housing systems during the rainy season (December to April). Twentyfour calves were raised from birth to 70 days of age in one of the following housing systems: hutches; shadecloth; or no shelter. Rectal temperature and respiratory rate measurements were taken twice a day (8:00 AM and 3:00 PM) when calves were 1, 4 and 9 weeks old. Respiratory rate was measured counting the number of respiratory movements per minute and rectal temperatures were taken with clinical thermometers. Behavior evaluation was done by visual observation of the animals every 10 min for a period of 24 h. There were no differences among the housing systems on body weight, average daily weight gain, starter intake and feed efficiency. Calves raised with no shelter showed increased rectal temperatures at the afternoon. It can be concluded that use of hutches might not be necessary considering that calves spent most of their time outside. Calves raised with no shelter had higher rectal temperatures and respiratory rates and were unable to maintain these variables under physiological conditions. Calves performance was satisfactory in all three housing systems evaluated.
