The results of this study indicate that the SEP (Transbond Plus) provides clinically acceptable bond strength values compared with the conventional method after thermocycling.
In a 4-week orthodontic adjustment period, intermittent force significantly reduced the amount of root resorption compared with continuous force. Although there was less degree of tooth movement with intermittent force, unwanted rotational movement was avoided. This is crucial in patients who are predisposed to orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption, and the use of this intermittent regimen should be considered.
The aim of this study was to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and debonding characteristics of a polymer mesh base ceramic bracket bonded with two different surface conditioning methods. InVu Readi-Base ceramic brackets were bonded to 100 human premolars with different etching protocols. With conventional method (CM), the teeth were etched with 37 per cent phosphoric acid for 30 seconds, while Transbond Plus self-etching primer (SEP) was applied as recommended by the manufacturer. SBS testing was performed on 25 samples of each group while the remaining 25 samples of each group were subjected to plier or machine debonding after thermocycling for 1000 cycles. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was used to determine the amount of composite resin on the enamel. Statistical analysis included Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-tests and Weibull analysis. Objectives:To determine the color preferences for elastic ligatures among patients receiving fixed-appliance orthodontic therapy.Methods:Five hundred patients with metal brackets (336 female patients and 164 male patients) were included, and their color preferences for elastic ligatures were recorded using a color scale. Chi-square analysis was performed to evaluate the color preferences and to determine the influence of age and gender on color preferences (P<.05).Results:Two hundred and seventy-six patients (55.2%) preferred strikingly colorful elastic ligatures, while 224 patients (44.8%) preferred less noticeable elastic ligatures. No significant difference was observed between the color preferences of female and male patients (P>.05). However, significant differences were observed between the color preferences of adolescents and older patients (P<.001).Conclusions:Female patients preferred red–purple-colored tones, while male patients preferred blue–black-colored tones. Adolescents preferred colorful elastic ligatures, while older patients preferred ligatures with less-noticeable colors. A stock of 10–12 colorful and less-noticeable elastic ligatures seems to be adequate to ensure patient satisfaction.
Pulp stones are usually found in the pulp chamber. Radiographically, they appear as radiopaque structures in the pulp chambers or root canals of individual teeth. Generalized pulp stones throughout the dentition are usually associated with systemic or genetic disorders of the dentine. This report presents an unusual case of a 13-year-old girl with generalized pulp stones with clinically normal crowns. The patient’s main complaint was a crossbite affecting all permanent canines. Radiographic examination revealed multiple pulp stones and several teeth with atypically shaped roots. Orthodontic treatment, gingivoplasty, and esthetic restorations were performed, thus using a multidisciplinary approach to establish functionally and esthetically sound dentition. The aim of this report is to present the treatment of a 14-year-old boy with scissors-bite. Mandibular symphyseal distraction osteogenesis (MSDO) with tooth-supported distractor was performed to expand the mandible, and intermaxillary cross elastics were used. The mandible was expanded approximately 9 mm. Asymmetric widening was done by using cross elastics and MSDO simultaneously. The buccal crossbite was corrected successfully. After a 2-year observation period, widening of the mandible using this procedure was judged to be stable. (Korean J Orthod 2011;41(1):59-69)
Based on the development of many adhesive systems and bonding techniques, bonding strength of orthodontic brackets has become even more important in modern clinical orthodontics. The aim of this study was to determine mean shearing stroke frequency of different orthodontic bracket types and bonding agents under cycling loading. Therefore, 10 different types of orthodontic bracket from 4 different brands were divided into 2 groups. Two different adhesives, namely Transbond™ XT etch-and-rinse for Group 1 and Transbond™ Plus self-etching-primer adhesive for Group 2 were considered. The brackets were tested under cycling loading force of 10-N and a crosshead speed of 300 mm/min and 40 cycle/min. The frequency of strokes that the brackets failed were determined and these data were analyzed by statistical analysis using an independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Generally, differences between the frequency of shearing strokes of the bracket failures were found to be statistically significant depending on the type of adhesives and brackets (p < 0.05). The bonding technique for Group 1 was found to have a significantly higher shear bonding strength than Group 2. It is also seen that different types of bracket belonging to the same or different brands had different shear bonding strength. It may be concluded that: (i) all bracket types used in this study can be applied with both bonding techniques, (ii) in order to minimize the risk of hard tissue damage, ceramic brackets should be carefully bonded using the self-etching primary adhesive technique.
