This study is aimed at finding out the level of speaking anxiety experienced by a group of pre-service English teachers at a university in Indonesia and investigating the factors contributing to their speaking anxiety. Using cluster random sampling, this mixed-method research took 30 pre-service English teachers from the same class as the research participants. The data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaires were adapted from FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) designed by Horwitz et al (1986). The result of the questionnaire shows that the students’ speaking anxiety is overall in the mildly anxious level. It was identified that there were six students (20%) in the level of very anxious, seven students (23%) in the level of anxious, 14 students (47%) in the mildly anxious level, one student (3%) in the relaxed level, and two students (7%) in the very relaxed level. The interview data indicated that the anxiety was likely because of several inter-related factors: social, linguistic, and personal factors. The social factors include fear of making mistake, feeling under pressure dealing with people, afraid of negative evaluation by teachers, worrying of losing face; the linguistic factor relates to students’ lack of English ability (grammatical issues, proper pronunciation, and vocabulary). While from the personal factor deal with issues such as low motivation and and family problems.
This study aims to document the assessment of alumni of teachers professional education program (PPG) in Riau University on the effectiveness of the PPG program in preparing prospective professional English teachers. All alumni of the 2018 subsidized PPG program at the University were selected as the sample of this study (15 people). Data was collected through the distribution of a Google form-based survey which was adopted from the PPG program evaluation questionnaire from the Ministry of Education, Higher Education. This study found that from the curriculum aspect, 84.6% of alumni said that the PPG curriculum content was in accordance with the needs of pre-service English teachers. However, 76.9% of participants stated that most of the material had been studied when they were in the undergraduate program. In terms of learning facilities, only 23.1% answered that they were satisfied with PPG facilities. 46.2% of them stated that the lecture room was not feasible. From the aspect of organizing services to students, only 42.6% said they were satisfied. The rest answered simply enough. From the aspect of the impact of the program, 69.2% of participants admitted that PPG had a significant impact on the development of their teaching profession. The greatest impact is on the aspect of both professional and pedagogical competencies. Thus, even though PPG is generally considered to be running quite well and has a positive impact, there are several aspects that need to be the attention of PPG organizers for the improvement of PPG in the future.
Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a neurologic disease affecting hands, which is closely related to work, and is the most prevalent nerve compression disease. The incidence of CTS quite often occur in people working with their hands, for instance the administrative staff, especially in a busy workplace such as Dr.Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung. CTS causes reduction in work productivity, and consequently degrading family welfare and the quality of public service. For that very reason, the prevalence and characteristics of CTS among administrative staff at Dr.HasanSadikin General Hospital Bandung needed to be revealed. Methods: This quantitative descriptive study involved 94 administrative staff in the Medical record department of Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital using the Carpal-tunnel.net questionnaire and further examinations by neurologists. Variables involved in this study were the subject characteristics. Results: Out of the 90 subjects, 22 stated having symptoms related to CTS (prevalence, 24.4%). On further clinical examination, 3 were diagnosed of suffering from CTS (prevalence, 3.3%). Conclusions: Carpal tunnel syndrome is found among the administrative staff at Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung and the prevalence is lower than in the general population. A further study is required to reveal ther specific division in the hospital with the most prevalent CTS case.
Background: Reduced handgrip strength is an aging process that influences the activities of daily living among elderly people. Handgrip strength varies greatly with age, gender, anthropometric measurement and nutritional status. This study aimed to determine the profile of handgrip muscle strength, physical characteristic, nutritional assessment and activities of daily living among elderly Methods: This study was conducted at Karitas nursing home, Bandung on September 2012. This is a descriptive study by collecting primary data from 28 elderly people. Data were collected in 2 days within 2 weeks. The first data collection included details of anthropometric measurement and handgrip measurement. The second data collection included face to face interview using standardized questionnaire for mini nutritional assessment and Barthel index. Result: The mean age of the respondents was 74.14 ± 8.5189 years. The average reading on handgrip muscle strength was 30.84 ± 12.0175 lbs for right hand and 27.77 ± 11.3778 lbs for left hand. For anthropometric measurement, most of the respondents had normal weight body mass index status (39.3%). Nutritional status of respondents evaluated by mini nutritional assessment showed that most of the respondents were at risk of malnutrition (64.3%). The activities of daily living assessment based Barthel Index showed that half of the respondents were dependent in activities of daily living (50%). Conclusions: From this study, it can be concluded that the grip strength of all the respondents are weaker. Majority have normal body weight, malnutrition risk, and half of the subjects are depend on others in doing their daily activities.
The government in Indonesia issues new rules to prepare pre-service teachers to be professional teachers in the future by asking them to attend additional education named Teachers Professional Education Program (locally known as Program Profesi Guru). This Case Study aimed to identify the obstacles experienced by pre-service English teachers in FKIP Universitas Riau during the PPG program and the Teaching Practicum (PPL) as a part of PPG program. This is qualitative research involving 10 alumni of the Subsidized PPG English Education Department. Focus Group Discussion was used to collect data from the participants. The data obtained were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s thematic analysis and referred to the three procedures introduced by Flick i.e., open coding, axial coding and selective coding with the help of the Nvivo 12 software. The findings showed seven emerging obstacles faced by the pre-service English teachers during Teachers Professional Education Program (PPG). There were one (1) obstacle found at the first-semester theory program in PPG, and six (6) obstacles found at the second-semester practicum program in PPG which known as PPL.
The aim of this research is to discover the correlation between social media activeness and vocabulary mastery of the English department students of Universitas Riau. The population of the research is all third-year students of the English department of Universitas Riau. The number of samples is 117 students. The research instruments are 1) a questionnaire, and 2) a test. The questionnaire is for the data on social media activeness while the test is for the data on vocabulary mastery. To analyze the data, the researchers employed IBM SPSS Statistics 25. The data analysis revealed that the mean score of the student’s social media activeness is 20.2, classified as 'high' level, whereas the mean score of the student’s vocabulary mastery is 69.3, categorized as 'good' level. Additionally, the research finding showed the correlation coefficient of the two variables is 0.480, denoting a positive and moderate correlation. Also, the determinant coefficient is 0.2304, which implies social media activeness has a 23% influence on the students' vocabulary mastery, leaving the other 77% to other factors. Having discovered that there is a moderately significant correlation between social media activeness and vocabulary mastery, it is suggested that the students need to start utilizing their social media well and wisely. Besides providing entertainment, social media can be a great platform for students to improve their English vocabulary mastery.
In this era of globalization, English has become the second language for some non-English speaking countries. But in Indonesia, English is actually being a foreign language. This is because learning English in junior high school is monotonous and boring. So students’ interest in learning is reduced. The purpose of this study is to create a media for learning English so that it can increase interest the environment feel in learning and trigger students’ enthusiasm in learning English subjects. The learning media is spinning wheel and a jumbo puzzle with picture of the Siak Palace. This learning media was tested limited to students of Pekanbaru Az-Zuhra Islamic Middle School. Students were divided into 3 groups. The group representatives would spin the spinning wheel which contained the difficulty level of the quiz and the group would discuss to answer the quiz about the material. After that, the group with the correct answers would paste several puzzles on the board according to the score that they obtained from the previous quiz. From the results of this limited test, based on questionnaires given after learning, it appears that there is an increase in interest and enthusiasm of students in learning English through this media. This learning media in general can build interest and increase student motivation in learning English and can build skills to work together in learning groups.
Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disabilities worldwide. Among all types of disabilities, disturbance in upper extremities functions is at the highest percentage. This study aimed to determine the profile of upper extremities function among stroke outpatients in Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung as an initial step to provide a better follow up and management.
