Fibromyxoma of the jaw is a rare benign mesenchymal odontogenic tumor with locally aggressive behavior. In the present report, a 13-year-old female patient presented to our university hospital with delayed eruption of some of her teeth. A panoramic radiograph taken at the initial examination revealed four pericoronal radiolucencies related to the four third molars. Thereafter, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination was performed. After the surgical removal of these molars, the microscopic examination diagnosed the four lesions as fibromyxomas. Here, we have discussed the clinical, panoramic radiography, MRI, and histopathological findings of the case.
The objective was to evaluate the effect of photobiomodulation (PBM) using 980 nm diode laser therapy (0.60 W, 0.77 W cm À2 , 36 J, 46 J cm À2 , 60 s) irradiated in continuous wave mode by flat-top hand-piece on socket healing in the maxilla and mandible. A split-mouth experimental design was performed on 6 dogs. The 3 rd premolar tooth was extracted from the maxilla and mandibles for both sides. The right-sided sockets were irradiated (PBM group), and the left-sided sockets were kept as control. Irradiation was done after extraction and at 48-h interval for 14 days. Both the buccal and lingual sides were irradiated to reach a total irradiation time of 120 s. Bone density was evaluated at 3, 4 and 5 weeks using cone beam computed tomography. We showed that maxillary sockets in the PBM group had higher bone density compared to control one at 3, 4, 5 weeks (P = 0.029, <0.001, <0.001), respectively. Mandibular sockets revealed no significant difference between PBM and control at 3 weeks (P = 0.347), while at 4 and 5 weeks PBM group showed higher bone density (P = 0.004, <0.001). In both groups, there was a significant increase (P < 0.001) in bone density by time which was higher in the PBM group. We concluded that PBM using a flat-top hand-piece of 980-nm improved the bone density of extraction sockets.
Subjects and Methods
SamplesA total of 500 panoramic radiographs of Egyptian Subjects (262 males and 238 females), aged between 18 and 71 years were analyzed. These panoramic radiographs were undergone at the Oral Radiology Clinic, Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, Cairo University (Proline XC, Planmeca Oy -Helsinki, Finland). The exposure parameters were set according to the patient's age and size. The patient's identification number, sex, age and date of radiographic taking were recorded. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were: Subjects should be clinically free from any developmental, endocrine or nutritional disorder and special dental diseases. Panoramic radiographs showing impacted teeth, teeth with root canal treatment, crown restorations, broken teeth, teeth with large areas of enamel overlap between neighboring teeth, missing one of the studied teeth or unclear radiographs were excluded from the study samples. All the three studied teeth, viz., mandibular canines (C), first premolars (PM1) and second premolars (PM2) were clearly visible. Protocols of the study and for radiographs collection of human subjects were approved by Ethical committee of
Cone beam computed tomography is a 3-dimensional high resolution imaging method. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 3 different NiTi rotary instruments used to prepare curved root canals on the final shape of the curved canals and total amount of root canal transportation by using cone-beam computed tomography. A total of 81 mesial root canals from 42 extracted human mandibular molars, with a curvature ranging from 15 to 45 degrees, were selected. Canals were randomly divided into 3 groups of 27 each. After preparation with Protaper, Revo-S and Hero Shaper, the amount of transportation and centering ability that occurred were assessed by using cone beam computed tomography. Utilizing pre- and post-instrumentation radiographs, straightening of the canal curvatures was determined with a computer image analysis program. Canals were metrically assessed for changes (surface area, changes in curvature and transportation) during canal preparation by using software SimPlant; instrument failures were also recorded. Mean total widths and outer and inner width measurements were determined on each central canal path and differences were statistically analyzed. The results showed that all instruments maintained the original canal curvature well with no significant differences between the different files (P = 0.226). During preparation there was failure of only one file (the protaper group). In conclusion, under the conditions of this study, all instruments maintained the original canal curvature well and were safe to use. Areas of uninstrumented root canal wall were left in all regions using the various systems.
