Several new medications, both with novel molecules and modified delivery systems, have been developed for the treatment of acne vulgaris. Trifarotene 0.005% cream, tretinoin 0.05% lotion, and tazarotene 0.045% lotion expand topical retinoid options while minocycline 4% foam and systemic sarecycline provide new antibiotic choices for patients. Clascoterone 1% cream is a first in class topical antiandrogen recently FDA approved for acne. This review provides an update on these medications, including their mechanism of action, clinical data, and where they currently fit in the acne treatment algorithm as well as practical application tips.
