Quality and efficient long-distance transport as a key system of public passenger transport could be the basis for the national and international comprehensive integrated transport system. Especially due to the pandemic caused by the COVID-19 disease, the demand for long-distance transport has significantly decreased since March 2020 in the Slovak Republic on the busiest long-distance line Bratislava–Žilina–Košice. It is, therefore, necessary to propose various measures in order to increase this demand and bring passenger frequencies to at least the level of values before this period. This paper analyzes the impact of the measures on passenger frequencies in 2020, examining the amount of their fall in individual months of the first half of the year 2020 on the long-distance route Bratislava–Žilina–Košice. Furthermore, the paper deals with the long-term concept of national long-distance passenger rail transport on the mentioned line in the period after the end of the pandemic. It uses scientific methods enabling to rationalize and optimize current train timetables. The benefits of these proposals will be to offer passengers better transport services, with their frequencies expected to increase in the coming years.
The paper deals with the implementation of a modified FMEA methodology according to the EU Commission Regulation no. 402/13 on a common safety method for risk assessment and evaluation in the railway sector. The basic goal is to create a methodology for risk identification regarding the safety of services in railway transport concerning railway crossings. Reason for this research was the fact that the manager of the railway infrastructure in Slovakia has problems related to accidents at railway crossings including problems with the quality of services when trains are delayed. Based on previous research, this area has been defined as a priority for risk identification. Accidents at level crossings are often the result of complex interactions between several factors. The results of the authors’ long-term research bring direct impact on the safety and quality of rail transport services. The first effect of the research is a detailed investigation of the causes of accidents, on which the new methodology is based. This is important because understanding the causes of accidents is the first step in eliminating them. The proposed new framework of the methodology provides guidance to the railway infrastructure manager on how to identify, analyze, evaluate and eliminate the risks of their effects.
Railway undertakings face many challenges and obstacles to competition in the transport market. Strategic management methods in relation to quality assurance of services provided by carriers, used not only in transport sectors but also in industrial sectors, are a way to continuously improve the quality of services and thus the competitiveness of railway undertakings. Nowadays, customers are becoming more and more demanding, also in view of the wider range of services offered by other modes of transport. For this reason, quality requirements are increasing. Most business strategy evaluation systems are only partial, limiting themselves to the assessment of certain factors where many shortcomings remain hidden. In the same way, a strategic plan for the economic growth and development of a transport organisation does not always ensure the achievement of the set objectives.
Accelerating rail transport is a key factor in improving the quality of passenger and freight transport. The main research question of the article asks whether it is possible to increase the speed due to the change in the interlocking. The main research tool is a comparison of the interval of crossing before and after the reconstruction of the interlocking. As the entire research is carried out on a single-track line at the Podbrezová station, the interval of crossing is the most relevant indicator. An associated goal of the entire research is to point out a possible increase in the carrying out of station tracks and an overall improvement in the working conditions of operational staff (station inspectors and switchmen).
