The disease COVID-19 negatively affected sustainable mobility, including public passenger transport, as it was necessary to take several measures to reduce the population’s mobility. It also limited rail passenger transport. Railway operators suffered from a significantly reduced number of passengers. An analysis of the transport performance of railway passenger transport is conducted in a case study in Slovakia. Based on the decline in transport performance in railway passenger transport and the degree of measures introduced, a new methodology and procedure for introducing pandemic measures are proposed in the context of reducing the scope of rail passenger transport. The measures are proposed under the condition that it is necessary to monitor the roles and responsibilities of railway infrastructure managers and rail passenger operators. The proposed methodology includes a transport performance forecast according to the defined transport reduction measure level and the train traffic diagram variants on the model railway line in the case of levels of the implemented measures. These proposals will contribute to higher quality and more efficient railway transportation, including optimal use of railway infrastructure capacity during emergency situations. The novelty of the research lies in the new methodological procedure and its practical application.

Pandémia COVID-19 ovplyvnila mnohé aspekty nášho každodenného života. Vlády prijali množstvo opatrení na obmedzenie šírenia pandémie, ktorá mala priamy vplyv na každodennú mobilitu, výber spôsobu dopravy a fungovanie verejnej dopravy. Tieto opatrenia boli do praxe implementované okamžite, bez koncepčnej systematickej prípravy. Príspevok je zameraný na návrh opatrení pre skvalitnenie a zefektívnenie prepravného procesu v železničnej osobnej doprave v ďalšom období pandémie. V procese vybavenia cestujúceho cestovným dokladom v období pandémie sú implementované nové technicko-technologické prvky v železničných staniciach a vlakoch pre zníženie rizika prenosu vírusu s cieľom ochrany zdravia cestujúceho a zamestnancov dopravcu. Zavedením modernejších systémov vybavenia cestujúceho v železničnej osobnej doprave formou automatizácie a digitalizácie procesov je možné zefektívniť a skvalitniť prepravný proces.

During the individual waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, several areas have been significantly changed in our society. Especially during its first wave in the spring of 2020, lockdowns began to be introduced practically overnight and several strict anti-pandemic measures were adopted in most countries of the world, which changed the lives of all residents. The mentioned changes also significantly affected the public passenger transport sector and the transport process. Many times, they were implemented into practice immediately without conceptual systematic preparation. This contribution is focused on a progressive proposal of measures to improve the quality and efficiency of the transport process in railway passenger transport in the next potential period of the pandemic. In the process of providing a passenger with a travel document during the pandemic, new technical and technological elements are implemented in railway stations and trains to reduce the risk of virus transmission in order to protect the health of the passenger and the carrier’s employees. By introducing more modern passenger equipment systems in railway passenger transport in the form of automation and digitization of processes, it is possible to streamline and improve the quality of the transport process.
