Zusammenfassung: Im Beitrag wird die "Theorie der Frame-Selektion" von Hartmut Esser unter Bezugnahme auf Max Webers Handlungstheorie einer Revision unterzogen. Das wesentliche Defizit der Theorie von Esser, das im fehlenden Geltungsbezug der Frames besteht, wird in seiner Konzeptualisierung des wertrationalen Handelns besonders deutlich. Es betrifft aber das Gesamtmodell. Um die utilitaristische Verengung der TdFS zu überwinden, wird der Vorschlag gemacht, die Logik der Situationsdefinition von der Logik der Handlungsselektion stärker zu trennen. Die Definition der Situation folgt demnach nicht der Logik der Nutzenmaximierung, sondern der Logik der Wertbeziehung und der Wertgeltung. Beide ebenenspezifischen Selektionsprozesse bleiben aufeinander bezogen. Aber jede Ebene verfügt über eine Eigenlogik, deren Verletzung zu Rationalitätsverlusten des Handelns führt.*
I. Das ProblemHartmut Essers Theorie der Frame-Selektion (TdFS) ist ein Versuch der Integration zweier sozialwissenschaftlicher Paradigmata: der utilitaristischen Werterwartungstheorie (SEU) und des interpretativen Theorems der Definition der Situation. Beide Paradigmata haben ihre Stärken, und beide erweisen sich letztlich als unzulänglich für die Erklärung sozialer Handlungen. Der interpretative Ansatz rekonstruiert den je spezifischen kulturellen Kontext des Handelns, ohne damit aber den Erklärungsanspruch einzulösen. In spiegelbildlicher Umkehrung bietet die SEU-Theorie präzise Erklärungsregeln sozialen Handelns an, die den kulturellen Kontext jedoch außer Acht lassen. Die Entwicklung einer allgemeinen Handlungstheorie, die soziales Handeln "deutend verstehen und dadurch in seinem Ablauf und seinen Wirkungen ursächlich erklären will" (Weber 1976: 1), setzt aber die Aufhebung jener Einseitigkeiten voraus. Genau dieses Ziel verfolgt Esser mit der TdFS. Dabei wird das Entwerfen des Handelns auf zwei Ebenen oder in zwei "Schritten" modelliert: Auf der Ebene der Definition der Situation selektiert der Akteur zwischen gedanklichen "Situationsmodellen".
