Zusammenfassung: Unter dem Pontifikat von Johannes Paul II. haben die Selig-und Heiligsprechungen in der katholischen Kirche eine bislang beispiellose Blütezeit erfahren: Er selbst hat bis 2004 insgesamt 482 Heiligsprechungen vorgenommen, also 180 mehr als alle seine Vorgänger seit 1592. Hinzu kommen noch 1.338 Seligsprechungen (im Vergleich zu den 980 in den Jahrhunderten davor), weitere potentielle Kandidaten für die Heiligsprechungen in der Zukunft. Das Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, diese außergewöhnliche Vermehrung der Seligen und Heiligen zu erklären und, darauf aufbauend, die generelle Funktion der Selig-und Heiligsprechungen für die katholische Amtskirche zu analysieren. Unter Bezugnahme auf Max Webers Charismakonzept wird gezeigt, dass Selig-und Heiligsprechungen dazu dienen, der Amtskirche eine zusätzliche Legitimation durch die Erweiterung der charismatischen Repräsentation zu verschaffen. Die Funktion der Seligen und Heiligen ist es, das durch Versachlichung bedrohte Amtscharisma mit dem personalen Charisma der Seligen und Heiligen zu verbinden. Diese Legitimation des Amtscharismas durch "Repersonalisierung" stellt zugleich eine besondere, bislang unberücksichtigte Umbildungsform des genuinen Charismas dar, die ihrerseits eine Erweiterung des Weberschen Charismakonzepts ermöglicht.
Die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Kommunitaristen und Liberalen erfreut sich seit Jahren einer beachtlichen Popularität. Im Zentrum dieser Kontroverse steht nach wie vor die alte Frage nach den politischen Verwirklichungsbedingungen der Freiheit. Der Kern der liberalen Position wird durch zwei Prinzipien bestimmt: erstens, durch das Primat individueller Rechte und zweitens, durch die politische Neutralität des Staates gegenüber allen Fragen persönlicher Selbstverwirklichung, was zu einer strikten Trennung zwischen öffentlicher und privater Sphäre führt. Beide Grundsätze sollen durch die Institutionalisierung universalistischer Grundrechte gewährleistet werden. Allein die allgemeinen und reziproken Rechtsansprüche, so das liberale Credo, sichern die gleiche Freiheit aller Rechtssubjekte, "ohne Ansehen der Person", ihrer Herkunft oder ihres Lebensstils.Nun ist es gerade die liberale Beschränkung der Politik auf die abstrakten, universellen Grundrechte, die von Kommunitaristen als "Kontextvergessenheit" (Forst 1994: 14 f) kritisiert und verworfen wird. Nach kommunitaristischer Meinung basiert der liberale Universalismus auf einem Rechtsverständnis, das alle lebensweltlichen Güter und Identitäten, alle moralischen Gefühle der Verpflichtung, der Solidarität und der Loyalität ausschließe. Auf Dauer zerstöre der liberale Standpunkt damit jene unverzichtbaren lebensweltlichen Ressourcen, die der Einzelne zur vitalen Verwirklichung seiner Rechte benötigt. Die abstrakte, "negative" Freiheit der Liberalen sei de facto nur ein unpolitischer "Möglichkeitsbegriff", der durch die "positive Freiheit", genauer durch einen kommunitaristischen "Verwirklichungsbegriff", abgelöst werden soll (Berlin 1993;Taylor 1988). Fraglich ist allerdings, ob durch diese kommunitaristische Aufwertung der kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Gegebenheit nicht letztlich einer "Kontextversessenheit" (Forst 1994: 14 f) das Wort geredet wird, die die Freiheit des Einzelnen auf Dauer bedroht.Soziologisch betrachtet kann diese Kontroverse als eine weitere "Fußnote" (Forst 1994: 213) zu der Frage gelesen werden, wie unter Bedingungen der 60 ÖZS 28. Jg. ÖZS 28. Jg.
Mit der Reihe "Studien zum Weber-Paradigma" soll ein Ort für solche Publikationen geschaffen werden, die sich in Interpretationen, theoretischen Weiterentwicklungen und empirischen Studien mit dem Werk Max Webers auseinandersetzen. Die Bezugnahme auf das Webersche Forschungsprogramm schließt dessen kritische Diskussion durch Vertreter anderer theoretischer Positionen mit ein. Institutionentheoretische Fortführungen, ethische und sozialontologische Fragen im Gefolge Weberscher Unterscheidungen wie auch neue oder alte Verbindungen Weberianischer Theorie mit philosophischen Strömungen werden diskutiert. Die "Studien zum Weber-Paradigma" sind einem undogmatischen und innovativen Umgang mit dem Weberschen Erbe verpflichtet.
