Little information is available for Central America regarding methane and carbon dioxide mixing ratios in urban areas. This work reports a representative spatial and seasonal study of near surface carbon dioxide and methane, carried out between July 2014 and January 2015 (27 weeks) in the Central Valley of Costa Rica, and other urban and rural sites across the country and covering three distinct seasons: Mid-summer drought (July-August), wet season (September-November) and transition period (December-January). The mixing ratios of both gases are clearly influenced by the metropolitan area, and by the prevailing atmospheric conditions during the wet season months. Average carbon dioxide concentration (629 ± 80 ppm) and average methane concentration (2192 ± 110 ppb) were up to 8% and up to 10%, respectively, higher during the wet season than the values recorded outside this period. HYSPLIT back air mass trajectories analysis, and weather data available for the Central Valley, suggest that these differences arise as result of a reduction in the mixing layer of depth (~425 m) and the wind speed (~1.5 m/s) across the valley, favoring the accumulation of polluted air masses in the metropolitan area. Other natural and anthropogenic sources, like the volcanic emissions of the Turrialba Volcano and the livestock activities at rural sites, apparently influence the mixing ratios of both gases across Costa Rica. Although the scope of this study is limited to representative seasonal conditions of the Central Valley in 2014 and 2015, it is possible considering the information presented in this work that the "dome" phenomenon can be assumed to exist.

Increasing energy consumption and food production worldwide results in anthropogenic emissions of reactive nitrogen into the atmosphere. To date, however, little information is available on tropical urban environments where inorganic nitrogen is vastly transported and deposited through precipitation on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. To fill this gap, we present compositions of water stable isotopes in precipitation and atmospheric nitrate (δ 18 O-H2O, δ 2 H-H2O, δ 15 N-NO3 -, and δ 18 O-NO3 -) collected daily between August 2018 and November 2019 in a tropical urban atmosphere of central Costa Rica. Rainfall generation processes (convective and stratiform) were identified using stable isotopes in precipitation combined with air mass back trajectory analysis. A Bayesian isotope mixing model forced with δ 15 N-NO3values corrected for potential 15 N fractionation effects reveal the predominant contribution of biomass burning and lightning to nitrate wet deposition. δ 18 O-NO3values in Caribbean convective rainfall reflect the oxidation chemistry of NOx sources whereas δ 15 N-NO3values in Pacific stratiform rainfall indicate the transport of nitrogen sources contributing to nitrate in atmospheric deposition. These findings provide necessary baseline information about the combination of water and nitrogen stable isotopes with atmospheric chemistry and hydrometeorological techniques to better understand wet deposition processes and to characterize the origin of inorganic nitrogen loadings in tropical regions.

La enseñanza de la Química a nivel de secundaria presenta deficiencia en la calidad de la formación de los estudiantes, lo cual provoca un bajo rendimiento en el curso inicial de Química I presente en toda carrera universitaria de corte científico. En la Universidad Estatal a Distancia, seis carreras incluyen en su plan de estudios la asignatura, la cual muestra un rendimiento de 20,2% de aprobación, 62,2% de reprobación y 17,6% de retiro, según el periodo comprendido entre los años 2010-2017. Durante el III cuatrimestre 2017, se aplicó una encuesta elaborada en Google Sites® a través de la plataforma moodle de la UNED, con el fin de obtener datos sociodemográficos, académicos y de desempeño en la asignatura de Química, y comparar los datos cualitativos y cuantitativos a través de procedimientos de análisis e interpretación de manera simultánea, tomando como referencia el diseño mixto de triangulación concurrente. Los resultados obtenidos en el análisis de los factores: actitudinales, de enseñanza-aprendizaje a nivel de estudios en secundaria y de enseñanza-aprendizaje a nivel de estudios universitarios, indican una relación importante entre las bases deficientes en el área de química y los altos porcentajes de reprobación en la universidad.

La Enseñanza Remota de Emergencia (ERE) es una forma de aprendizaje que implica el uso de soluciones de enseñanza totalmente a distancia, que, de otro modo, se impartirían presencialmente o como recursos combinados o híbridos, los cuales deben regresar al formato original una vez que la crisis o emergencia que los origina cesa. En el presente trabajo de investigación se desarrolló una Estrategia Remota de Emergencia en los Laboratorios (EREL) bajo el concepto de Modelo de Laboratorio Extendido (LE), con el fin de ser aplicado y evaluado en las asignaturas que implican laboratorios de experimentación Química en la Universidad Estatal a Distancia de Costa Rica (UNED-CR).  El proyecto evaluó la efectividad de la EREL a partir de la perspectiva de la persona estudiante, la perspectiva de la persona docente y del desarrollo de prácticas presenciales. De acuerdo con la percepción del estudiantado, las prácticas caseras son las que colaboraron en mayor medida (más efectiva) para la comprensión de los fenómenos químicos presentados en la asignatura. No obstante, de acuerdo con la percepción de la persona docente, el estudiante debe mejorar en aspectos como la manipulación de sustancias químicas de forma segura y el uso correcto de instrumentos de laboratorio, así como el desarrollo de habilidades y técnicas de laboratorio. La EREL en el contexto COVID-19 es valorada positivamente por el equipo docente y la población estudiantil, sin embargo, se determinó que con una sola sesión presencial los estudiantes no adquieren las habilidades técnicas básicas de las asignaturas con laboratorio, por lo que es indispensable retomar la presencialidad y utilizar los recursos del Manual de Prácticas Remotas (MPR) de forma complementaria en las asignaturas.
