This study aimed to investigate constructive and destructive conflict resolution strategies used by married women and men, as well as the association of these strategies with sociodemographic and relationship variables. Participants were 750 heterosexual couples living in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, who answered the Conflict Resolution Behavior Questionnaire - CRBQ and 16 questions about sociodemographic data and relationship characteristics. Variance and correlation analyses were conducted in order to verify the differences and associations between the study variables. The “compromise” conflict resolution strategy was used more by men compared to women, and women used the “attack” strategy more often when compared to men. For both, religiosity was correlated with constructive strategies, whereas having children was associated with destructive strategies. Considering these findings, the aspects that can favor constructive management of conflicts by spouses are discussed.
ABSTRACTThis article evaluated the predictive role of attachment styles in marital conflict resolution.
Couple Therapy and Conflict Resolution Strategies: A Systematic ReviewAbstract: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of scientific articles about couple psychotherapy and conflict resolution strategies and to identify variables involved in the therapeutic process. Eight databases were consulted: Academic Search Complete, Cochrane Library, IBECS, Lilacs, Medline, PsycINFO, SciELO and Web of Science, from 2006 to 2015. We found 238 articles and, after an evaluation by three independent judges, 13 studies were included in this review. The behavioral and cognitive-behavioral approaches have excelled in relation to the systemic and to the psychodynamic ones. On one hand, there was consensus on the role of communication, empathy, forgiveness, mutual support and confidence for resolving marital conflicts. On the other hand, there is a lack of homogeneity and clarity in the use of the concepts and techniques. The literature review provided an international overview, consisting of consensual perspectives already established, inconsistencies that must be overcome and a lack of studies, especially in Brazil, culminating in a potential context of thematic research.
This study aimed to identify conflict resolution profiles and assess relationship quality levels associated with each profile. The participants were 750 heterosexual couples living in southern Brazil. They filled out measures about conflict resolution strategies, relationship quality, and sociodemographic data. A latent profile analysis was conducted in order to classify participants regarding conflict resolution. Variance and association analyses were also conducted in order to examine relationships between the resolution profiles and other study variables. Four profiles were identified: Low Conflict/Withdraw, Validator, Hostile, and Volatile. The Validator profile showed higher relationship quality, followed by Low Conflict/Withdraw and Volatile profiles, which did not differ from each other, and the Hostile, which showed low levels of relationship quality. We conclude that even though validation and negotiation are desirable, emotionally intense strategies may also be beneficial for couples in some contexts.

Palavras-chave: conflito conjugal; relações conjugais; medidas; validade do teste. ABSTRACT-Conflict resolution strategies for couples: Validity evidences for the CRBQ This study verified validity evidence for the Brazilian Portuguese adaptation of the Conflict Resolution Behavior Questionnaire-CRBQ. The sample was composed of 750 heterosexual couples, who lived in Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil, and completed a questionnaire containing sociodemographic data, the CRBQ and the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State-GRIMS. Exploratory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha reliability estimates and correlations between the two scales were conducted. Reliability estimates ranged from .68 to .79. The final version of CRBQ presented three dimensions, representing the strategies of conflict resolution: compromise, avoidance, and attack. The Brazilian version of the instrument was adequate for the assessment of conflict resolution strategies among couples. However, to improve the instrument, some item need further revision. A revised version of the CRBQ is presented, to be tested in future studies.
