A trial was carried out in a greenhouse at UFERSA, Mossoró, RN, Brazil, aiming at evaluating the effects of irrigation water salinity on initial growth and characteristics related to leaf anatomy in cultivars of pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata D.) and moranga (Cucurbita maxima D.). The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with a 4 x 2 factorial scheme and three replications. Treatments resulted from the combinations of four genotypes (Pumpkin Xingó jacarezinho "casca grossa", Pumpkin mini Paulista Isabela, Moranga Crioula Pataka and Moranga Coroa) with two irrigation water salinity levels (0.5 and 3.5 dS m -1 ). Plants were collected 40 days after seeding. The following variables were analyzed: main stem length, root collar diameter, leaf number, leaf area, leaf dry mass of, stem dry mass, shoot dry mass, specific leaf area and leaf area ratio. Initial growth and leaf biometry in pumpkin and moranga plants were influenced by irrigation water salinity, which response was cultivar dependent. Genotypes Moranga Crioula pataka and Moranga Coroa showed larger tolerance to irrigation water salinity.
Eruca sativa. Estresse salino.Abstract -The use of saline water for vegetable production is a major challenge for researchers and farmers. Cultivation in inert substrate can be an alternative, since the low matric potential can reduce the effect of salinity on plants. This study was conducted in a greenhouse at the Departamento de Ciências Ambientais e Tecnológicas da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Mossoró-RN, in order to evaluate the performance of two cultivars of rocket grown in substrate and fertilized with nutrient solutions of different salinities . Ten treatments were evaluated in a factorial 2 x 5, two cultivars (C 1 -Cultivada e C 2 -Folha Larga) and five salinity levels of the nutrient solutions (S 1 -1.2; S 2 -2.2; S 3 -3.2; S 4 -4.2 and S 5 -5.2 dS m -1 ), using a randomized design. Harvesting was performed at 30 days after sowing and evaluated the following variables: number of leaves, height, leaf area, total fresh and total dry mass. The salinity of the nutrient solution adversely affected the development of rocket, grown on a substrate, however, cultivation rocket substrate may be performed using electrical conductivity of the nutritive solution to 2.36 dS m -1 without loss in yield fresh pasta. The Folha Larga cultivar produced more total fresh and dry weight in relation to cultivar Cultivada, but to cultivar Cultivada has increased tolerance to salinity than cultivar Folha Larga.
Rapid tests have been essential to evaluate the physiological potential of seeds and the tetrazolium test is one of those which have been used by seed companies. The objective of the study was to establish the procedure for the tetrazolium test in Libidibia ferrea (Mart. Ex Tul.) L.P. Queiroz var. ferrea seeds. For this, three tetrazolium solution concentrations (0.05, 0.075 and 0.1%) and three staining periods (1, 3 and 6 hours) at temperatures of 35 to 40 °C were tested. The seeds were also evaluated by the germination test, whose result was compared with viability by the tetrazolium test. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial design 3 x 3 + 1 (three concentrations x three periods + a control = germination test) for each temperature. Viable seeds in the tetrazolium test were compared by Tukey’s test (p ≤ 0.05), while the comparison between the viable seeds with germination test was carried out by Dunnett’s test (p ≤ 0.05). It is recommended that the tetrazolium test for L. ferrea is carried out at a concentration of 0.05% for three-hour staining under 35 °C or 40 °C.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of physiological priming with salicylic acid on the mitigation of water and salt stresses on onion (Allium cepa L.) seeds. For this, seeds of onion, cultivar IPA 11, were soaked in salicylic acid solution (50 µM) for 24 h and placed to germinate at different water and saline potentials. For water stress, the experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme (salicylic acid with 0 and 50 µM and osmotic potentials of 0, -0.1, -0.2, -0.3, -0.4 MPa induced by polyethylene glycol 6000), with four repetitions of 50 seeds per plot. In salt stress, the adopted experimental design was completely randomized, with treatments distributed in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme (salicylic acid at concentrations of 0 and 50 µM and the osmotic potentials of 0, -0.3, -0.6 and -0.9 MPa induced by NaCl), in four repetitions of 50 seeds. For both experiments, germination, growth and accumulation of organic solutes were evaluated. Salicylic acid did not stimulate the germination of onion seeds in the absence of stress, but the application of 50 µM of salicylic acid increased the germination speed, growth and dry matter accumulation under conditions of water and salt stress. Onion plants were efficient in performing osmotic adjustment up to the potentials of -0.2 MPa induced by PEG 6000 under water stress and of -0.4 MPa induced by NaCl under salt stress.
ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a biostimulant on gherkin seeds, cultivar Liso de Calcutá, under conditions of salt stress. A split-plot experimental design with five replications was used; the main plot was represented by two levels of irrigation water salinity (0.5 and 3.5 dS m -1 ), and the subplot was composed of five biostimulant doses applied as a seed treatment (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mL kg -1). The following variables were evaluated: the number of leaves; number of branches; length of the largest branch; leaf, stem, fruit and total dry matter; number of fruits; average fruit weight; and fruit production. The values of all analyzed variables decreased with an increase in irrigation water salinity regardless of the biostimulant dose, but in the absence of salt stress, biostimulant use led to an increase in the number of leaves and branches, the length of the largest branch and biomass accumulation. Biostimulation was not effective in reducing the effects of salinity on gherkin production, but it increased fruit production regardless of the salinity level.
The aim of this work therefore was to evaluate five different concentrations of a nutrient solution (25, 50, 75, 100 and 125% of the standard solution) on the quality of seedlings of three tomato cultivars (Cherry Pendente Yubi, Santa Amélia and Santa Adélia), grown in a standard coconut fibre substrate, and fertigated by subirrigation. The experimental design was completely randomised, in a 3 x 5 factorial scheme, with five replications. The seedlings were evaluated at 30 days after sowing for the following variables related to vegetative development: basal stem diameter (DC, mm), number of leaves (NF), seedling height (ALT, cm), length of main root (CRP, cm), shoot dry weight (MSPA, g), root dry weight (MSR, g) and total dry weight (MST, g), ratio of height to basal stem diameter (ALT/DC) and the Dickson Quality Index (IQD). All the variables in the cultivars under study showed significant responses to increases in nutrient concentration of the nutrient solution. Considering the indices ALT/DC and IQD, tomato seedlings of better quality were obtained when fertigation was carried out using nutrient solution at concentrations between 70% and 90% of the solution recommended for the tomato in a hydroponic system. At this concentration range, the cultivar Santa Adé...
